Jeremie Frimpong ‘undergoes medical today’ ahead of $39M Liverpool transfer

4 Min Read

Jeremie Frimpong appears set to become the first signing of the summer for Liverpool after it was claimed he has already had his medical. Earlier in the weekend, he was left on the bench during Bayer Leverkusen’s final game of the Bundesliga season against Mainz.

While he could have left Germany last summer, Frimpong ended up staying. But a year on, not least with Xabi Alonso heading out to join Real Madrid, it didn’t seem likely that he would remain again.

With a $39 million (£30 million) release clause, Leverkusen was always going to be vulnerable to losing the player. At 24 years of age, he is ready for his next challenge.

It had earlier been claimed that a medical would take place next week. But according to The Times’ Paul Joyce, Frimpong underwent his medical examinations today ahead of a move to Liverpool.

According to Fabrizio Romano, it was only the first part of the medical examination, but it seems that the deal is edging closer to completion with personal terms not thought to have ever been a potential issue. The player is keen on the move, and he has been tracked for some time.

Elsewhere, Conor Bradley, of course, signed a new contract yesterday, with the pair set to be right-back options after Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure.

“To sign another contract, I’m very proud and happy to see what the next steps on our journey together will be,” Bradley told the Reds’ official website. “You’ve just got to keep your head down and keep working hard.

“It has been a fantastic two years [with the senior team]. Especially since coming back from loan and doing so well last year and continuing that on this year. It’s been really good. So, hopefully we can keep going and keep making more memories.”

Bradley could start for Liverpool against Brighton tomorrow in the penultimate game of the Reds’ Premier League campaign. It remains to be seen whether or not Alexander-Arnold will feature again.

But he will be there as Virgil van Dijk lifts the trophy and then while it gets paraded around the city the following day.

“To play even more games but also to win more trophies,” Bradley said of his targets for the future. “I think the whole point of playing football is obviously to win trophies and be successful.

“So the more of them we can win, the better it will be for me and the whole team. Hopefully if we can keep doing that, it’ll be a good next few years at the club.”

Liverpool.com says: Bradley has a lot of talent but you cannot have just one specialist in the right-back position. Frimpong is a very different kind of full-back but he will add depth and a varying skillset. That is the main thing with an Alexander-Arnold clone impossible to find.
