Ally McCoist names perfect next club for Jamie Vardy after emotional Leicester farewell

Ally McCoist would take Jamie Vardy at Rangers ‘in two minutes’.

Vardy announced in April he would depart Leicester City at the end of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

He signed off on his glittering Foxes career in style as Vardy scored the opener in Leicester’s 2-0 win over Ipswich Town on Sunday.

Vardy’s goal was his 200th for Leicester and it came in his 500th appearance, which just so happened to be 13 years to the day he arrived at the King Power Stadium from Fleetwood Town.

Although he may be 38, Vardy has already confirmed his intentions to continue his career elsewhere.

talkSPORT understands Vardy has offers on the table from Major League Soccer (MLS) and has suitors in Saudi Arabia.

However, McCoist believes the veteran marksman still has plenty to offer at an elite level and would love nothing more than to see Vardy smashing goals at Ibrox.

“Something tells me that he’s got something organised,” McCoist said on talkSPORT Brekfast.

“Whether it’s America or another club, I think he’ll have something organised.

“Now, we were having this discussion yesterday, me and my Rangers mates. I would take him in two minutes at Rangers. I really, really would.

“I’d take him in two minutes.”

McCoist’s love for Vardy has lasted for over a decade, as the Rangers icon revealed he even tried to sign the Foxes hero during his three years in charge of the Scottish giants.

“I love him, I absolutely love him,” McCoist said.

“I tried to sign him, I couldn’t get any money. I tried to sign him from Fleetwood when I was managing at Rangers and I could not get any money to sign him.

“‘Bomber’ John Brown was watching him three or four times. He said, ‘You’ve got to get him’.

“I couldn’t get £200k or whatever it was to buy him.”

Rangers’ loss turned out to be very much Leicester’s gain as they snapped up Vardy from the Cod Army for just £1million in 2012.

It turned out to be perhaps the shrewdest investment in the Foxes’ history.

The Sheffield-born marksman slammed home 24 goals to help Leicester defy 5000-1 odds to win the 2015/16 Premier League.

Vardy also played a role in his side lifting the FA Cup for the first time in club history during the 2020/21 campaign and the Community Shield the following season.

He departs the King Power Stadium sitting third in Leicester’s all-time scoring list behind Arthur Chandler and Arthur Rowley, who scored 273 and 265 goals for the club respectively.

Vardy also finishes his time with the fourth-most appearances for the Foxes, with Graham Cross, Adam Black and Kasper Schmeichel ahead of him.

The 38-year-old sits among some of the Premier League’s all-time greats as his tally of 145 league goals is 15th on the all-time scorers list.

He may yet add to that haul, as commentator Geoff Peters believes there’s clubs in the Premier League who could do worse than snap up the speedy striker.

Peters even floated the idea a serious title contender may be one of the clubs preparing to swoop.

“Has he got something lined up? Nobody knows, nobody is saying anything at the moment,” Peters said on talkSPORT Breakfast.

“But he will not be short of suitors. I think there’s a number of clubs in the Premier League that could use Jamie Vardy. Not necessarily as a starter every week.

“Arsenal are looking for a striker, aren’t they? You can imagine him coming off the bench in the last 20 or 30 minutes in games.

“He’s still got pace to burn, he still knows the way to goal. He’s still got a lot to offer.”
