And after securing the title with four weeks to spare, obliterating its rivals in the process, Liverpool should provide a healthy proportion of the 2024/25 XI.

Even if performances tailed off slightly in the spring – and certainly since the title has been wrapped up – Arne Slot ’s Reds dominated for the vast majority of the campaign. But which Liverpool are definites, maybes and absolutely nots in the annual team of the year? Here’s our take ahead of Sunday and the final round of Premier League matches.

Definites

Mohamed Salah surely must be the first name on any prospective 2024/25 team. He has the most goals and assists this season and is just two shy of the all-time goal involvements record for an individual campaign. Salah has already set a new best tally over a 38-game campaign. In fact, the 32-year-old has enjoyed one of the best individual seasons in Premier League history and has already been crowned FWA Player of the Year, earning over 90 per cent of the votes.

Likewise, Virgil van Dijk is a must. He hasn’t missed a minute of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign, leading from the heart of defense. He popped up with a seismic goal against West Ham United in the run-in and has barely put a foot out of place defensively. The Dutchman has been the league’s best center-back, and is a shoo-in for the Premier League TOTS.

There’s a third name who simply can’t be overlooked: Ryan Gravenberch. The Dutchman solved Arne Slot’s biggest selection dilemma in the summer when he missed out on signing Martin Zubimendi, and Gravenberch’s ability to shield a back four and build attacks from the back has been imperative this season. He also started every single match prior to the title being wrapped up.

Maybes

A handful fall into this category: worthy candidates for the team of the year, but perhaps not absolute guarantees.

Ibrahima Konate has been among the division’s best defenders, and his error-free displays could be deserving of a spot in the team. It comes down to personal preference and whether the likes of William Saliba, Murillo or Nikola Milenkovic have been better.

Alexis Mac Allister is in a similar position. The World Cup winner has offered stability alongside Gravenberch in midfield and provided more control in Slot’s system. He has also scored five important goals across the campaign.

Finally, Alisson falls into this bracket. He has enjoyed another magnificent season and remains the league’s best. Performances at Anfield against Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham particularly underlined that. In truth, what perhaps puts others ahead of Alisson is the low number of chances Liverpool concedes. A mid-season injury also hasn’t helped the Brazilian’s cause, and he has missed around a quarter of the campaign.

Absolutely nots

Dominik Szoboszlai has been excellent this campaign, but five goals and 10 assists falls some way short of the league’s other top attacking midfielders. Likewise, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have lacked a consistent end product this season, although the latter has been impacted by injury since February. Had the team been picked then, the former PSV Eindhoven man could have been in with a shout.

Trent Alexander-Arnold ’s swansong season on Merseyside has been one of his best from a defensive standpoint, but he has been unable to provide the sort of attacking numbers that have made him an automatic inclusion in previous years.

On the opposite flank, Andy Robertson, while missing just six league games so far, has had a disappointing season. The Scotland captain has endured too many difficult days in a red shirt. Compared to the likes of Antonee Robinson and Milos Kerkez, Robertson has lagged way behind, a thought process which appears to be influencing FSG’s transfer decision makers.

Others such as Curtis Jones, Conor Bradley, Caoimhin Kelleher and Darwin Nunez have played their part this season, but haven’t been automatic Liverpool starters, let alone being nominees for the team of the season.
