Richard Hughes has already enjoyed an exceptional start to the summer transfer window at Liverpool.
Liverpool ultimately weren’t able to convince Trent Alexander-Arnold to stay amid interest from Real Madrid, but they have reacted superbly well.
Liverpool expect to sign Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen in the near future and they’re also making progress in recruiting a new left-back, too.
Milos Kerkez is in talks with Liverpool and Hughes is clearly wasting no time in upgrading Arne Slot’s squad for the demands of next season.
Should both Frimpong and Kerkez sign, Liverpool’s starting eleven will be immediately improved and clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea might be looking on with some envy.
That being said, Liverpool could be competing with both of those Premier League rivals when it comes to recruiting a new striker this summer.
Liverpool should turn their attention to Victor Osimhen
By all accounts, Liverpool want to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United — a race they would be in pole position to win were the Swede to leave St James’ Park.
However, that currently seems unlikely to happen, even if Eddie Howe has refused to rule out Isak leaving Newcastle.
Therefore, it might already be time for Liverpool to move on from Isak in pursuit of other targets.
Hughes clearly wants to get Liverpool’s business going quickly, and any move for Isak might be one of the most drawn out sagas of the summer.
As a result, Liverpool should be looking elsewhere, and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen could be the perfect alternative.
Liverpool are interested in Osimhen and the striker is thought to be available for £60m this summer — a very reasonable fee given he’s one of very few world-class strikers operating in European football.
Osimhen is on big wages but in terms of what he could offer Slot’s side on the pitch, a move could be well worth it.
Osimhen is the best Isak alternative for Liverpool
In terms of players Liverpool could target besides Isak and Osimhen, the likes of Viktor Gyokeres, Hugo Ekitike and Benjamin Sesko then come into the conversation.
But Slot needs a striker who is ready to contribute immediately — Ekitike and Sesko would need time to learn on the job.
Gyokeres could be an interesting option for Liverpool, but some will conclude that he’s slightly below the level that Hughes should be targeting.
And whilst Isak is understandably Liverpool’s first choice, ‘perfect‘ Osimhen is easily the best goalscorer on the market otherwise.
Chelsea want to sign Osimhen and Liverpool really could send a statement by making a strong move for the on-loan Galatasaray striker, who seems destined for a crack at the Premier League sooner rather than later.
