Jeremie Frimpong has completed the first part of his medical ahead of his transfer to Liverpool.
The defender is expected to become the club’s first signing of summer, with the 24-year-old set to strengthen Liverpool’s options at right-back following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave the club.
Frimpong is the first piece of the puzzle for Arne Slot as he looks to build a squad that will challenge on multiple fronts next season and retain its Premier League crown.
The Reds moved decisively to activate the €35 million ($39M/£30M) release clause in Frimpong’s contract. There are expected to be no hitches on the deal at this stage.
Personal terms have been agreed and Frimpong completed the first part of his medical on Sunday. It’s understood the second section will take place soon, and reports have suggested that could happen at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre on Monday.
Frimpong will then head on holiday Liverpool.com understands, with the Bundesliga season now concluded.
The Dutch international was an unused substitute in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2-2 draw against Mainz on Saturday, the final game of the domestic campaign in Germany. It was also the last match of Xabi Alonso’s premiership at Leverkusen, with the ex-Liverpool midfielder expected to be joining Alexander-Arnold at the Bernabeu.

It was also confirmed last week that Liverpool transfer target Dean Huijsen will move to Real from Bournemouth this summer.
As for Frimpong, his arrival at Anfield will offer head coach Arne Slot a different option to the creativity provided by Alexander-Arnold.
The former Celtic defender is a more explosive, dynamic player, with Leverkusen often relying on his direct dribbling to create chances.

The news comes as reports suggest Liverpool is stepping up its pursuit of Milos Kerkez. The Hungarian has been identified as a primary transfer target for the Reds, and represents a similar profile on the left flank.
Meanwhile, Conor Bradley signed a new long-term contract at Liverpool over the weekend, with the Northern Ireland international set to compete with Frimpong for a starting berth at right-back next season.
“If I look at the way we think about next season and our squad, these are things that are on my mind. I think we can find one or two extra weapons that this team doesn’t have,” Slot said on Friday, while he also confirmed his mind is more on transfers than matches at this stage of the season.
Liverpool travels to Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday night for its final away league match of the campaign.
