Bayern Munich is the Bundesliga champion…

Noted pundit Did Hamann took some time to assess Bayern Munich’s season, including the performance of head coach Vincent Kompany.

“I think he has done okay. He’s steadied the ship as there was a lot of unrest in the camp last season. Vincent Kompany seems to have a very good relationship with the players which is different to last season under Thomas Tuchel. In the league, they have been pretty solid and have only lost two games. With two or three games to go, they have nearly secured the Bundesliga title after losing it last season. They lost to Bayer Leverkusen in the cup with 10 men, they played really well and were unfortunate to lose the game.” Hamann said during an interview that was conducted on behalf of Leo Vegas. “In the Champions League, they have to improve as they lost three games in the group phase and had to go through the playoffs and were fortunate against Celtic. They played their two best games against Leverkusen and with Inter Milan, it was a bit of a disappointment because people thought they would go past them and set up a semifinal against Barcelona. Vincent has done okay. In the league they have been good, but in the Champions League, they have to do better.

When asked what Bayern Munich could have done better this season, Hamann assessed the team’s positional groups and injuries.

“They have quite a few injured players out. They have Jamal Musiala out, and he will probably be back for the Club World Cup. They have Dayot Upamecano who has really improved under Vincent Kompany but has been out for the last few weeks. For the other wingers, Leroy Sané has had a good spell but they couldn’t really rely on anybody,” Hamann said. “The defense has been their Achilles heel. They leak too many goals, and this is where they have to improve and bring a new center-back in. What they have to do is focus on the flow of the game because they rely on individual brilliance from Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala or Harry Kane who is the one converting the chances. They need more flow in their game to really work the opposition the way Bayer Leverkusen did last season.”

Finally, Hamann was asked about any potential changes that could happen ahead of the 2025/26 campaign and the pundit does not think that Kompany will move anywhere.

“It is (Kompany’s) first season at a big club, and we know that Bayern Munich is not an easy club to manage. We had big managers here in Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti who didn’t last here very long. He has done enough to go into next season but the form in the Champions League has to improve,” Hamann noted. “The club will probably look at every position but at the moment, if you bring a manager in like him and he wins the league which is the target and the minimum, you have to give him credit for what he has done because it is new to him, even though he speaks the language very well which has helped him to get to know the players. I would be surprised if he is not the manager of Bayern Munich next season.”
