Report: Bayern Munich might not be frontrunner for Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz as Manchester City, Liverpool loom

Bayern Munich has competition…

According to a report from kicker’s Stephan von Nocks, Bayern Munich is not necessarily the favorite to land Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz:

With Manchester City, Liverpool FC and FC Bayern Munich, three clubs have submitted their concrete interest. The international and his parents, who act as his advisors, have spoken to the managers of all three clubs. Now Wirtz, who has not yet extended his contract, which runs until 2027, has to make a decision. This has still not happened.

What is clear, however, is that Munich are not as clearly in pole position as many reports would have us believe. Not only FC Bayern, but also one of the two top English clubs are said to be in a very good position and therefore have high hopes of signing the 22-year-old. This has not yet happened.

It is also clear that a club like Manchester City, who still have to reckon with a transfer ban this summer, would like to conclude a deal as quickly as possible. So if it were the Sky Blues who believe they hold such good cards with Wirtz after the talks, the Premier League club would do everything in their power to get the deal over the line quickly – also with a view to the Club World Cup from mid-June.

As it stands, Wirtz and his camp might have finished their due diligence and now might just be sorting out a decision:

The second point that speaks for more speed in the Wirtz case is that the player now has all the information he needs to make a decision as soon as possible. As soon as this has happened, the chosen club will make an offer for the international. Not before.

After all, it makes no sense to enter into transfer negotiations before you even know whether the player wants to join you. Especially as Leverkusen’s transfer fee expectations of around 150 million euros are an open secret anyway. Accordingly, any reports of transfer bids for Wirtz are not based on reality. CEO Fernando Carro also underlined this last week when he stated that there was “no offer from any club.”

Should Bayern Munich start to worry about this potential deal? Maybe not that much.

Per BBC Sport journalist Sami Mokbel (via @iMiaSanMia), Manchester City could be dropping out of the race for Wirtz because of the overall cost it would have to incur:

Manchester City are withdrawing from the race to sign Florian Wirtz. City’s feeling is that the transfer, which would be the most expensive in their history, does not represent value for money. They estimate the deal would cost around €300m all in and are concerned that it is over-inflated.

Bayern Munich’s season is over, but we have plenty to talk about. Let’s discuss how we feel about the season and why fan expectations will be higher in 2025/26. We’ll also hit on Harry Kane’s statements, which seem to indicate that he could extend his contract, while also giving a breakdown of Bayern Munich’s big contract/transfer situations. Finally, we touch on Uli Hoeneß proving he has not lost a step with the media as he provided some commentary on the Florian Wirtz transfer saga.
