Barcelona president Joan Laporta makes final decision on Lamine Yamal and Hansi Flick contracts

After a 2024-25 season surpassing the expectations, FC Barcelona president Joan Laporta has taken a final decision regarding coach Hansi Flick and Lamine Yamal’s contracts.

FC Barcelona have been one of the standout teams of the 2024–25 season, with head coach Hansi Flick implementing a dominant system and 17-year-old Lamine Yamal enjoying a breakout year. To continue this successful project, club president Joan Laporta has reportedly made final decisions regarding the futures of both the coach and the rising star.

Flick took charge last summer following Xavi Hernandez’s departure, inheriting a squad under financial restrictions and delivering far beyond expectations. In his debut season, the German coach led Barca to a domestic treble—winning La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup—with Yamal emerging as one of the team’s most influential players.

Both Flick and Yamal were under contract through June 2026—a situation that raised mid-term questions about their futures. To address this, Laporta taken the decision to extend their contracts with Barcelona.

In an interview with La Vanguardia, Laporta addressed Flick’s renewal: “It had already been mentioned that back in January we agreed to extend his contract by one more year, until 2027. We haven’t formalized that agreement yet, but Hansi is a man of his word. He proved it when he said he couldn’t come because he had signed with the German national team. But it was already in his mind—and mine—that one day he would coach Barca.”

Laporta also spoke about Yamal’s extraordinary rise and his commitment to the club. “He’s a genius who enjoys Barca, who has friends at the club, and who is also part of a generation that has shared a lot with his teammates. He’s a player with exceptional individual talent, but also a true team player who feels comfortable here,” Laporta said.

Regarding Yamal’s contract renewal, Laporta said everything is already in place: “He also has an agent, Jorge Mendes, with whom we have an easy line of communication. His renewal is practically agreed upon—it just needs to be confirmed.”

When will Yamal and Flick sign their extensions?

Both Yamal and Flick have agreed to continue with the club according to president Laporta, but official announcements have yet to be made. So, when can Barcelona fans expect the contracts to be signed?

In Yamal’s case, the club is waiting for him to reach legal adulthood. Since underage players in Spain can only sign short-term contracts, Barcelona will wait until Yamal turns 18 on July 13 before finalizing the long-term deal.

As for Flick, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that the coach has already signed his new contract, which will keep him at the club until June 2027. Barcelona is expected to make the official announcement on Wednesday, securing the architect of their domestic treble for at least two more seasons.
