Liverpool’s ambition heading into the summer is summed up by their intention to sign Florian Wirtz.
Liverpool have opened talks to sign Wirtz already — as the German international looks set to leave Bayer Leverkusen in the coming months.
While the Reds are not known to make marquee signings as such, it seems like the youngster’s potential availability is deemed too good an opportunity to turn down at Anfield.
Furthermore, Manchester City have surrendered in Wirtz’s pursuit — which hands Arne Slot and Co the advantage in the race to secure his services if a move to the Premier League attracts the Bundesliga winner.
The prospect of Florian Wirtz having a potentially transformative impact on Liverpool explains why they are in the race for his signature.
Liverpool willing to wait for Florian Wirtz to decide his future
However, Bayern Munich back themselves to sign Wirtz in the summer.
But even so, the draw of signing for the Premier League champions, who will contend to win the Champions League next season must have played on the Bayer Leverkusen technician’s mind.
Wirtz is set to decide his future and Fabrizio Romano has revealed that unlike Manchester City, Liverpool are willing to give him the time to do so: “They met with the parents of the player, they presented the project, they would be prepared to pay a very important transfer fee, they presented a very ambitious plan for the future, so Liverpool wanted to position themselves on this one. Trying, doing their very best, then if the player decides to go to England, Liverpool are ready.”
“Otherwise, if he goes to Bayern, Liverpool will have no regrets because they did their very best.”
“At the moment, he has made no decision. I am also told that Manchester City probably wanted Florian Wirtz to be faster with his decision. Man City didn’t want to wait too long. Liverpool, for example are willing to accept the player’s time so let’s see what happens in terms of timing.”
Liverpool already know which club Wirtz will join
Wirtz would appreciate the fact that unlike Manchester City, Liverpool have given him the time to finalise the biggest decision of his career.
Even if the creative midfielder would now like to sign for Arne Slot’s side, leaving Germany would be a difficult decision for him.
But Liverpool expect Wirtz to join Bayern or stay at Bayer Leverkusen next season.
Journalist David Lynch revealed: “It is very much my understanding that he is a player who is liked and that Liverpool would quite like to do a deal for if it was possible. Now, expectations are kind of being played down around Liverpool at the moment as they’re very much positioning this that their expectation is the player wants to stay in Germany either with Bayer Leverkusen for maybe another season or to join Bayern Munich.”
“They aren’t playing down the idea that if he were to come onto the market and want to move to England this summer they would absolutely be in there and try to put a deal together.”
