BBC 5 Live Sport pundit Julien Laurens launched a scathing attack on West Ham manager Graham Potter after another underwhelming performance from his side this weekend.
This season has been one of significant managerial turnover, with seven managers losing their jobs since August.
Some of the most notable sackings were handed to Erik Ten Hag of Manchester United and Everton’s Sean Dyche.
And with the campaign nearing its conclusion, a number of managers will be under intense performance review having seen their clubs fail to impress. That includes West Ham boss, Graham Potter.
Graham Potter berated for defensive setup after another home loss
Speaking after West Ham’s 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest yesterday, BBC 5 Live pundit Julien Laurens tore into Hammers’ head coach Potter.
“The question is, how many of the West Ham fans want Graham Potter there next season? Because let’s be honest here, it’s been so underwhelming since he took over”, Laurens said.
“Nine defensive players when you play at home?” he continued, before saying that traditionally defensive midfielder Tomas Soucek playing in the no.10 role would make “Diego Maradona turn in his grave”.
Laurens lambasted the exclusion of flair players. Lucas Paqueta was again named among the substitutes. “Nine defensive players?! It’s not for me”, he repeated.
Since he succeeded Julen Lopetegui in January of this year, Potter has won just three of his 17 games in charge. That is a win percentage of approximately 17.6%.
They currently sit 15th in the Premier League, on 40 points. Had the promoted teams not struggled so badly this season, could West Ham have had a serious relegation fight on their hands?
How does Potter compare with previous West Ham managers?
With the mood around the London Stadium feeling somewhat dour at the moment, it is easy to forget that the Hammers were regularly threatening the European positions as little as two years ago.
So, where does Graham Potter rank among West Ham managers in years gone by for Premier League wins?
Manager | Win Percentage |
Avram Grant (June 2010 to May 2011) | 31.91% |
Julien Lopetegui (July 2024 to Jan 2025) | 31.81% |
Glenn Roeder (May 2001 to April 2003) | 31.40% |
Gianfranco Zola (Sept 2008 to May 2010) | 28.75% |
Graham Potter (Jan 2025 to Present) | 17.6% |
Albeit having overseen a smaller number of games, Graham Potter currently holds the worst Premier League win percentage of any West Ham manager in history.
So, will he be afforded the summer to hopefully kickstart a more positive campaign for the Hammers?
