‘Let’s see’: David Ornstein shares what he’s hearing about Liverpool signing Florian Wirtz

3 Min Read

Liverpool are attempting to pull off an audacious move for Bayer Leverkusen forward Florian Wirtz.

Florian Wirtz is one of the hottest properties in Europe right now with the German international having enjoyed another stellar campaign.

Bayern Munich were confident of signing Wirtz, however, competition from several major clubs has thrown a spanner in the works for the newly crowned German champions.

Man City have dropped out of the race for Wirtz, but Liverpool remain firmly in contention and Real Madrid also retain an interest in the 22-year-old.

David Ornstein has now been discussing what he believes to be the latest on the Euro 2024 star and whether the Premier League champions stand a chance of capturing his signature.

Bayern Munich leading Liverpool in Florian Wirtz race

Bayern Munich are favourites ahead of Liverpool in the race to sign Florian Wirtz, according to David Ornstein.

The Merseyside club have appreciated the player for a long time and plan to make a strong push if the forward decides he is open to leaving Germany.

Ornstein said: “Liverpool do have an interest in Florian Wirtz, also of Bayer Leverkusen. But there’s no guarantee this will happen; let’s see if he’s going to leave Bayer Leverkusen at all.

“Let’s see if he wants to leave Germany — if he does, then Liverpool are going to make a push for him. He’s a player they’ve liked for a long time, but Bayern Munich is possibly the favourites to sign him.

“Manchester City were in the frame as well, but it seems today that they’ve pulled out of that and some are suggesting it’s between Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

“Liverpool will be there for a player of that calibre, you’re always going to be interested, but there’s no certainty that it’s going to go further.”

Liverpool deny meeting with Florian Wirtz

TBR Football believes that Wirtz has already decided to join Bayern Munich and made that clear to Man City during a meeting with them last week.

Meanwhile, TBR Football also understands that Liverpool have denied meeting the German international, despite reports suggesting talks took place.

Leverkusen are not very happy with Bayern and haven’t given up hope of keeping him for another 12 months, however, losing Xabi Alonso has made that tough.
