Red Devils legend Rio Ferdinand has given his verdict on Man United’s forward ranks after Matheus Cunha looks set to arrive at Old Trafford.
It has been a tough first season for Ruben Amorim at Old Trafford, with a big summer transfer window needed as he looks to rebuild the club.
Despite the torrid campaign, Manchester United face Tottenham in the Europa League final, meaning that the Portuguese manager could still end the year with some silverware, offering him a bailout clause he desperately needs.
The Red Devils have already been active in the transfer market and their business will not stop there, although questions over which players could still depart the club are being raised.
Rio Ferdinand believes Alejandro Garnacho has a future despite Mateus Cunha arrival
Despite the imminent arrival of Mateus Cunha for £62.5m from Wolves, Man United legend Rio Ferdinand believes that highly-rated Alejandro Garnacho still has a future at the club, even if he is constantly linked with a move away.
Speaking on his podcast Rio Ferdinand Presents, he admitted to taking a U-turn on his previous stance over the Argentine, saying:
“The more I see the team, the more he looks like he’s capable of learning and playing.
“If someone gets Garnacho for £50/£60m, they’ve got a bargain.”
“He’s doing ridiculously well now at United for a young kid and if you look at his numbers, they are really good for a kid and he is only going to get better,” he added.
Ferdinand has urged Man United to sign Cunha for quite some time, although he still thinks the pair can play alongside each other.
How do Garnacho and Cunha compare this season?
Cunha’s arrival at Old Trafford adds something different to the team and for Amorim, it will hopefully provide some goals as United’s attack has struggled with this all season.
Premier League Stats 2024/25 | Alejandro Garnacho | Mateus Cunha |
Appearances | 36 | 31 |
Goals | 6 | 15 |
Assists | 2 | 6 |
Shooting Accuracy (%) | 36 | 41 |
Big Chances Missed | 14 | 2 |
In comparison with Garnacho, Cunha outperforms him in almost every statistic and is much more composed in front of goal, something that United fans will be hoping rubs off on the rest of their lacklustre attack.
Capable of scoring and assisting goals, the Brazilian appears to be a smart signing for the Red Devils, although he will need a cooler head if times get tough, as he has missed six games through suspension this season.
