‘Too much for me’: Ally McCoist now reacts to ‘crazy’ rumour he has heard emerging from Liverpool

Liverpool made shockwaves after winning the Premier League title in Arne Slot’s first season, and the Reds are continuing to surprise people.

Some even tipped Liverpool not to qualify for the UEFA Champions League after Jurgen Klopp departed at the end of last term, but those who stayed at Anfield handled the change superbly, securing the Premier League title with relative ease.

Now, the challenge for Liverpool is to remain competitive, as the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City attempt to bridge the gap with some smart recruitment this summer.

However, Liverpool themselves are trying to expand the gap further with a £126m move for Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz – according to The Times – a rumour which has stunned Ally McCoist.

Ally McCoist warns Liverpool not to splash out on Florian Wirtz

Signing the Germany international would require Liverpool to smash their transfer record – which is currently the £85m spent on Darwin Nunez – and the man born in Bellshill thinks Slot could use his budget more wisely.

When asked by Jeff Stelling if he feels the fee is too high, McCoist told talkSPORT: “Yes, for anybody (it is) – that’s my argument. Is he a good player? Yeah. Is he a top player? Yeah, but straight away if you can get three players at £40m or maybe an £80m and a £40m — yes is the answer to the question.

“I think that money could be better spent, I really do. Yes I like him as a player and he’ll make a difference in any side but it’s too much for me, it really is too much. I know the market has gone crazy but I still think the priority (should be a striker).”

Wirtz, who Manchester City have backed away from, scored 16 goals and provided 15 assists in 45 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen this season, so you can see why the Bundesliga outfit value the 22-year-old so highly.

Liverpool think they are about to make a bargain addition

While Wirtz would be far from a bargain despite his obvious talent, Liverpool are about to wrap up a deal those at Anfield consider to be very shrewd.

Liverpool are close to signing Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen after deciding his £29.5m release clause was too good to ignore, and Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that the Reds think the Netherlands international is worth much more.

The reliable Italian journalist said: “Liverpool are convinced that the potential of Jeremie Frimpong is massive, and he is a player worth probably more than the release clause in their view. That’s why Liverpool are ready to make this investment.”

So, while Wirtz would be a very expensive deal, one McCoist clearly disapproves of, the 62-year-old will presumably be happier to hear about the modest Frimpong fee.
