Arsenal, Chelsea showing ‘transfer interest’ in £80m-rated Newcastle star

3 Min Read

Arsenal and Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United attacker Anthony Gordon this summer.

Gordon has spent over two years at Newcastle after joining the club from Everton in January 2023 in a deal worth up to £45m.

The winger has gone on to make 105 competitive appearances for the Magpies, scoring 22 goals and providing 23 assists.

Gordon registered 26 goal contributions in 35 Premier League matches last term, but he has struggled to match those numbers this season, having netted six goals and contributed six assists in 33 top-flight appearances.

Despite struggling to find his best form this term, Gordon still appears to be attracting transfer interest ahead of the summer window.

Arsenal, Chelsea eyeing Gordon move

According to inews, London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea are showing an interest in signing the Newcastle forward this summer.

Arsenal and Chelsea’s interest comes a year after the 24-year-old was heavily linked with a move to recently-crowned Premier League champions Liverpool.

At the time, there was some suggestion that Newcastle were considering a sale to ease their concerns over meeting the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

A year on, Newcastle’s PSR issues do not appear to be such a pressing issue, so they are under no pressure to entertain offers for their key players.

However, there is a belief that they have placed a £80m price tag on Gordon, who is under contract until the summer of 2028.

Do Arsenal, Chelsea need to sign a winger?

It is unclear whether Arsenal or Chelsea would be willing to meet Newcastle’s asking price, but the two clubs are likely to make an effort to strengthen their wide options this summer.

Raheem Sterling will return to Chelsea following the end of his loan spell with Arsenal, while there is uncertainty surrounding Leandro Trossard‘s future at the Emirates Stadium, with the Belgian set to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

Mikel Arteta‘s side could view Gordon as a viable option to become the club’s first-choice left winger, with Bukayo Saka already regarded as the number one option on their right flank.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are expected to offload Sterling this summer, while they could also pay a penalty fee to Manchester United to avoid fulfilling their obligation to buy Jadon Sancho at the end of the season.

If there are departures, the Blues would surely look to add to their wide options, which currently include Pedro Neto, Noni Madueke and Tyrique George.
