‘No way’: Ian Wright can’t believe what he’s just heard about Mikel Arteta at Arsenal

Following their victory against Newcastle United last weekend, Arsenal secured the runners-up spot in the Premier League for a second season in a row.

Mikel Arteta and his Arsenal side once again came up short in terms of a title challenge, but they did retain their position as the best of the rest.

Of course, Arteta has raised expectations so much at the Emirates Stadium that finishing second in the league and reaching a Champions League semi-final is now seen as a disappointing season.

The Spaniard has restored Arsenal to the title conversation every season, which shouldn’t be understated.

Although, Arteta has still been criticised of late, partly because of his defiant comments when Arsenal have come up short.

That being said, Jill Scott asked a question about Arteta’s future on the ‘Stick to Football’ podcast that had Ian Wright baffled.

After discussing who should win the Manager of the Season in the Premier League, the panel then spoke about Arteta’s efforts with Arsenal this season.

And following a bit of debate about Arsenal’s progress, Scott asked the following question about Arteta: “If he’s not doing well at Christmas, could he go? Do you think he’ll definitely be there?”

Immediately replying with some gusto, Wright said: “Who are you talking about? Which Arteta? Is there another Arteta in another parallel universe or something? Arteta ain’t getting sacked from Arsenal. No way.”

Roy Keane replied: “You just said he’s never getting sacked.”

Wright: “Well, he will not be sacked. I think that it will be something that he’ll move on.

Jamie Carragher asked: “Even if he’s not in the top two by Christmas?

Wright: “No way would he be sacked if he’s not in the top two by Christmas. Probably be third.

“Probably be third by a couple of points. There’s no way. His journey is still happening for him.”

Arsenal’s summer transfer plans

Of course, part of the reason why Arsenal weren’t able to win a trophy this season was their reluctance to buy a striker in January — a much criticised decision.

But by all accounts the Gunners will be targeting a new number nine this summer and significant investment will be made.

Andrea Berta wants to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP, but it remains to be seen if Mikel Arteta will green-light the move on his side.

Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad too, a player who Arne Slot wanted at Liverpool last summer.

And it’s clear that Arsenal do have a lot of ambition in the transfer window this summer, and Arteta’s plans do deserve to be backed.
