Spurs, like their opponents on Wednesday night, have had an awful season. Their form in the Premier League has been abysmal, and they are, in some ways, lucky not to have been involved in a relegation battle.
Tottenham can make everyone forget about their season in the Premier League if they beat Manchester United in the Europa League final in Bilbao.
Winning the game won’t just end their trophy drought and send them into next season’s Champions League, but it will also make one of Paul Merson’s predictions about Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou look very silly.
What Paul Merson said about Ange Postecoglou winning a trophy at Tottenham this season
Ange Postecoglou has been ridiculed a lot this season.
The Australian publicly claimed earlier in the campaign that he always wins trophies in his second season. That is a fact, and he is still on track to achieve that.
However, not many people gave Spurs or Postecoglou a chance of getting their hands on a trophy, mainly due to their terrible performances in the Premier League.
Merson, who played many North London Derbies against Tottenham back in the day, was adamant that there is no way that Postecoglou will win a trophy this season.
He said on Sky Sports Super Sunday back in September 2024: “I like Ange, I like him. But I’ve got more chance of winning Strictly [than Ange winning something in his second season]!
“That’s what chance they have got. Nah, I don’t see it at the moment.”
For those wondering, Merson was knocked out of Strictly Come Dancing in the fifth week of the show.
Paul Merson’s Europa League final prediction
Merson’s prediction about Tottenham and Postecoglou not winning anything this season was brutal, but it could backfire.
Spurs have beaten Manchester United three times already this season, and if they can do it again, their 17-year trophy drought will be over.
However, Merson still believes Tottenham will lose for one reason.
He said on Sky Sports: “I think Man United (will win the Europa League). I think Kulusevski’s a massive miss. I think if Kulusevski’s playing, I’m probably going with Tottenham.
“I think he is by far their best player, and I think he’ll be a big miss. I just think Man United have that little bit extra than they do, in my opinion, but it could go any way.”
Dejan Kulusevski is not the only Tottenham player who will miss the final against Manchester United — James Maddison and Lucas Bergvall are ruled out of the game too.
