Real Madrid and big name signings go hand-in-hand almost every year, although one club legend has fired back a response to questions over his uncertain future.

By Real Madrid’s standards, it’s been a catastrophic campaign after losing to Arsenal in the Champions League quarter-finals, before missing out on the La Liga title to rivals Barcelona.

But as Carlo Ancelotti’s reign is coming to an end, the Xabi Alonso era is about to get underway, with Real Madrid making moves in the transfer market early to set Alonso up for success.

Big name signings are being linked with a move, but there is one deal in particular that is set to be announced, with a current club legend responding to his imminent arrival.

Dani Carvajal not scared of Trent Alexander-Arnold arrival

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid is one of football’s worst kept secrets and his switch to the Spanish capital will excite many, although current right-back Dani Carvajal is not worried about losing his place.

In response to whether he will be competing for a spot with the scouser, he said: “Competition with Trent? Yes, that’s clear. It’s not official yet, but it looks like it!

“Fear? No, there is no fear here. We will be teammates. The competition will strengthen both of us and will bring out our best.”

The 33-year-old has been at the club for 12 years and has racked up 286 appearances, although doubts surrounding his future have been circulating after missing the most of the season with an ACL injury.

How do Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold compare?

Both Carvajal and Alexander-Arnold are very different players in their own right, with the latter perhaps more suited to Alonso’s attacking system.

Alexander-Arnold 2024/25 League Stats Carvajal 2023/24 League Stats
Appearances 32 28
Goals 3 4
Assists 6 3
Clean Sheets 4 10
Tackles 71 51
Crosses 145 50
Stats correct as of 21/05/2025

Alexander-Arnold is often criticised for his defensive frailties, although his attacking prowess is where he excels and is one of the world’s best, often registering double digits for assists.

As for Carvajal, he is known for the opposite and attackers find it tricky to find a way around him, giving Madrid a perfect balance of options for their right-hand side.

Alonso may have somewhat of a selection headache when it comes to choosing his right-back week in, week out, but it is a dilemma that most managers would bite their hand off for at their club, with both players hoping to make the position their own next season.
