Ruben Amorim has insisted that he will leave Manchester United if the club’s hierarchy and fans no longer have faith in him as manager.

The Red Devils sunk to new lows on Wednesday night after losing 1-0 against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final, missing out on the chance to secure Champions League football.

United’s defeat has compounded a poor season for fans given the club are 16th in the Premier League with 39 points and could finish as low as 17th.

The loss has piled further pressure on Amorim, especially as the club are set to be significantly impacted in terms of finances now that they have failed to qualify for European football.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Amorim stated that he was confident he would remain in charge, but added he would not fight against his dismissal, saying: “I have nothing to show to the fans, so at this moment it’s a little bit of faith. So let’s see. I’m always open. If the board and the fans feel I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day, without any conversation about compensation. But I will not quit.

“I’m still really confident in my job and, as you can see, I will not change anything in the way I do things. I am always really honest. But I’m not going to talk about the future – tonight we need to deal with the pain of losing this match. It was clear we were the better team, but we managed not to score again. The guys tried everything to win the game and I think we were better than the opponent.”

Having only arrived from Sporting Lisbon in November 2024 after replacing Erik ten Hag, Amorim’s dismissal would be an astonishing turn of events considering his appointment brought a wave of optimism back to the club.

A historically poor season

Prior to the 2024-25 season, United’s points tally of 58 in 2021-22 was the team’s lowest ever points total in Premier League history.

The Red Devils can achieve a maximum total of 42 points this term, a tally that was not enough to save four teams from relegation in previous Premier League seasons.

Amorim has faced criticism for refusing to adapt his style of play to the squad at his disposal despite the fact he has won just six top-flight games.

In fact, United have lost 14 league matches under Amorim and are winless in their last eight, suffering six defeats in that time.

The 40-year-old manager has overseen the team’s worst ever season in the Premier League and has arguably not shown that he can be trusted to lead the club forward.
