Yamal and Raphinha want Neymar — Barcelona make final decision on Santos star’s possible return based on two key factors

The return of Neymar Junior to Barcelona has long hovered like a familiar shadow over the Camp Nou — tantalizing, nostalgic, and, for some fans, seemingly inevitable.

The return of Neymar Junior to Barcelona has long hovered like a familiar shadow over the Camp Nou — tantalizing, nostalgic, and, for some fans, seemingly inevitable. As the 2025 summer transfer window approaches, fresh rumors had reignited the dream, bolstered by links, player support, and whispers from the president’s inner circle.

However, after months of consideration and internal debate, Barcelona has made a final decision regarding Neymar’s possible comeback, basing it on two decisive factors that ultimately ended the speculation.

The Blaugrana’s persistent search for a top-quality left winger created an opening that seemed tailor-made for Neymar. Their failed move for Nico Williams last summer led them to sign Dani Olmo, and this year, Luis Diaz and Rafael Leao were placed on the club’s radar. Yet the Brazilian’s name kept surfacing — not just as a player, but as a marketing magnet, a fan favorite, and a potential emotional catalyst for the Camp Nou faithful.

According to Sport, Neymar had even received a challenge from the Catalans’ hierarchy: “score 15 goals with Santos first and then we will consider signing you.” At 33 years old, Neymar had joined Santos in January with the goal of proving himself worthy of one last ride in Europe. To date, his numbers remain modest: three goals and three assists in 11 appearances, totaling just 629 minutes on the pitch. His contract with the Peixe runs only until June 30, which could have allowed for a free transfer — especially crucial given Barca’s strict salary limit regulations.

Agent Andre Cury, who maintains a close relationship with both the player and the club, added fuel to the speculation: “You know he should never have left and if there is a chance, he would be delighted to return. I think that if the club decides to go after him, his return is feasible,” he told RAC1.

Dream denied: Two deciding factors

Despite the romance surrounding the Brazilian’s potential return, Barcelona has officially ruled out any move for the Brazilian forward. As per Diario Sport, the decision hinges on two key reasons — both sporting and philosophical.

The first is a name that has taken over not just the team sheet, but also the hearts of the Camp Nou faithful: Lamine Yamal. The 17-year-old sensation, already a double winner and a strong Ballon d’Or contender, has become the club’s new face for the future. Sport reported that “the spectacular growth of Lamine Yamal has made the club rethink any need for a big-name winger like Neymar.”

Yamal has openly expressed admiration for the veteran and was even eager to share the pitch with his idol, but the club fears that Neymar’s return would overshadow his trajectory, particularly as Barcelona prepares to inaugurate the new Spotify Camp Nou — an event likely to feature the Spanish teenager front and center.

The second reason is rooted in Neymar’s own body. Since suffering a serious cruciate ligament injury in 2023, the experienced winger has struggled to stay fit. His stint at Santos has done little to ease concerns. “He has missed nearly as many games as he’s played,” Sport‘s article observed, highlighting his recurring muscle issues and lack of consistent minutes. Despite his intentions to use Barcelona as a springboard toward the 2026 World Cup, the club was unconvinced by his physical condition.
