Arne Slot says £34m Liverpool player is ‘probably’ going to get worse next season

4 Min Read

Arne Slot has enjoyed one of the most incredible debut campaigns of any manager in Premier League history.

Indeed, Arne Slot has led Liverpool to a league title at his first attempt, and Slot has earned tons of praise for his management this season.

Of course, you can’t win the league unless your players show up for you as well, and it’s fair to say Slot has been able to rely heavily on one of his star players.

Mohamed Salah has been in Ballon d’Or winning form this season, and his remarkable performances have earned him a new contract.

Speaking to The Athletic, Arne Slot has been discussing Salah’s form this season, and he’s made an interesting claim about the Egyptian heading into next year.

Arne Slot says Mohamed Salah will not reach the same heights next season

Slot was asked about Mohamed Salah’s performances this term and how he’ll get on next year.

The Liverpool boss says Salah has set incredible standards this year, but he doesn’t expect the attacker to do the same again next year.

“What a season Salah has had — 33 goals and 23 assists in all competitions, setting crazy high standards,” The interviewer said.

“Yeah and standards he’s probably not going to live up to in the upcoming two seasons. I hope he can, but it’s not even necessary. Even if he scores and assists a few less, it will still be a great season. But I know Mo, he’s going to try to achieve even more. He’s going to work so hard every single day to do even more special things for this club,” Slot said.

Most goals for Premier League players over 30

Slot says he expects Salah to have a bit of a dip over the next two years, and that’s not surprising.

Indeed, at the age of 32, Salah is at that age where players start to slow down.

However, as we’ve seen on a number of occasions over the years, players over the age of 30 have had some incredible seasons in the Premier League.

Most goals for Premier League players over 30 Goals Age
Didier Drogba 29 31
Mohamed Salah 28 32
Jamie Vardy 23 33
Ian Wright 23 32
Frank Lampard 22 31

Salah is already closing in on Didier Drogba’s record this season, and he’ll be hoping to break that record next term.

Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema have all continued scoring tons of goals into their late 30s, and there’s no reason why Salah can’t do exactly the same at Anfield.

Salah will be desperate to prove Slot’s comments wrong here, and after this term, you’d find it hard to back against the £34m man.
