Arsenal have endured a difficult 2024/25 season which has seen them finish empty-handed despite such lofty expectations back in August.
However, the Gunners have secured Champions League football for next season and are very likely to finish second in the Premier League table.
Although Arsenal have one more game left this season, the club has already started looking ahead to next term, with contracts and transfers already on the cards.
However, one report on this front has left some Gunners fans annoyed, with a feeling that the club is now making a “wrong decision”.
Arsenal fans criticise reports of new contract for Leandro Trossard
On Thursday, reports emerged claiming that Arsenal are in advanced talks with Leandro Trossard over a new contract, with his current deal running until 2027.
Talks have picked up pace in recent weeks and there is growing optimism of discussions coming to a positive conclusion, according to BBC Sport.
This hasn’t gone down too well with some Arsenal fans, who feel Trossard’s quality, age and current contract length mean fresh talks shouldn’t be happening.
In addition, Gunners supporters commented on rumours of a new Arsenal contract for Thomas Partey alongside the reports for a new deal for Trossard.
“Contract for Trossard and Thomas Partey… And a pay rise as well for going trophy-less… Arsenal very unserious club,” one fan wrote on X.
“They applaud mediocrity… While Spurs are busy lifting European trophy… Useless Arsenal gifting pay rises to useless players.”
Another said: “I love Trossard but it’s clear we need to move on and get a younger LW. Giving him a new contract another awful decision.”
The criticism kept coming, with one fan writing: “I’m not sure I get the Trossard new contract stuff.
“Yeah, he’s probably underpaid for what his role has been. So what? That happens but the contract is the contract.
“Players don’t give money back if they are paid more than their market value do they?
“Not sure the club should do anything especially if the deal runs through 2027 plus an option year.”
Another fan wrote: “New contract offers for Partey and Trossard are wrong on so many levels.
“It makes zero sense to reward guys that are in their 30s, have fitness issues, lost speed and agility because of their age.
“Don’t want to mention the amount of mistakes they did that cost us in previous seasons.”
Why Arsenal are offering new contract to Leandro Trossard
Trossard has been a decent squad option at Arsenal for a number of years now, but some feel he’s not the type of player to take the club forward.
In addition, Ian Wright criticised Trossard after his ineffective performance against PSG in their Champions League semi-final first-leg loss.
However, Arsenal have recognised for some time that Trossard’s contract does not reflect his standing within the squad, according to The Athletic.
As a result, the Gunners are now engaged in negotiations to put that right – and rather than extending his contract, talks relate to a salary increase, said the report.
In addition, Trossard has admirers among Europe’s biggest leagues and previously fielded offers from Saudi Arabian clubs – so it’s not as though there’s no interest in him.
If one of Trossard’s suitors submitted an appropriate offer, the player’s age and contract situation mean all parties would have to consider it, added the report.
Therefore, it looks as though Arsenal are looking to reward Trossard for his contributions to the club and keep a ‘potential difference-maker’ and positive dressing-room influence around.
