Manchester United lost in the Europa League final on Wednesday evening, and alarm bells are, once again, ringing at Old Trafford.
After defeat in Bilbao, reality has set in, this is the worst season in Manchester United’s modern history, and a serious rebuild is needed.
Luckily, the summer transfer window is just around the corner, and help could be on the way.
United have been linked to a few exciting signings this summer. Liam Delap is a Manchester United target, while Matheus Cunha has been linked to United too.
Speaking on Premier Sports, Richard Dunne has been discussing the idea of Matheus Cunha joining United, and it’s fair to say he’s not thrilled by this move.
Richard Dunne reacts to Matheus Cunha to Manchester United rumours
Dunne shared his verdict on Cunha potentially going to Old Trafford.
Dunne says he does think Cunha is a good player, but he doesn’t think this is the transformative type of signing United need to make in order to get back to the top level.
“At the moment, it looks like they’re going to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and if that’s the market they’re shopping in I’m not sure how quickly they’re going to return to being that hugely successful club that they expect to be,” Dunne said.
“Cunha is a good player, but he isn’t a world beater.”
Manchester United signings from mid-table clubs
Dunne says that Cunha isn’t a world-beater who will transform Manchester United, and he may not be wrong.
Indeed, as good as Cunha is, he’s a big fish in a small pond at Wolves right now, and he may not have the same sort of impact if he goes to Manchester United.
United have been here before, they’ve often tried to sign star players from mid-table clubs, and these sorts of moves very rarely work out.
Manchester United signings from mid-table clubs | Fee | Club signed from |
Harry Maguire | £80m | Leicester |
Romelu Lukaku | £75m | Everton |
Aaron Wan-Bissaka | £50m | Crystal Palace |
Edwin van der Sar | £2m | Fulham |
Louis Saha | £13m | Fulham |
Harry Maguire has been solid for Manchester United, but he’s not been worth £80m, and he’s taken the Red Devils down to 16th in the Premier League.
Romelu Lukaku didn’t quite work out for United, while Aaron Wan-Bissaka was a tad too one-dimensional for a team of this stature.
Edwin van der Sar was a transformative signing from Fulham, and while Louis Saha was excellent on his day, he had numerous injury issues that hampered him.
You could argue that United need to target more high-profile players, but which players of that calibre will want to sign for a team currently sitting 16th in the table?
