Man United injury, suspension news vs. Aston Villa: Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez updates

Manchester United will be bidding to end a desperately disappointing 2024-25 campaign on a mildly positive note when they take on Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Ruben Amorim‘s side suffered a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final on Wednesday night, so the Red Devils will not play European football of any kind during the 2025-26 season.

Man United have also had a disastrous domestic campaign, sitting down in 16th spot in the Premier League table, and they have not been victorious in England’s top flight since March 16.

Here, Sports Mole rounds up the team’s injury and suspension news ahead of their contest with Villa, who are attempting to sneak into the top five on the final matchday of the campaign.

Status: Out
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: Unknown

Martinez suffered a severe knee injury during Man United’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace on February 2, and the Argentina international is expected to be on the sidelines for the remainder of 2025.

Status: Major doubt
Type of injury: Knee
Possible return date: May 25 (vs. Villa)

De Ligt has been sidelined since the clash with Brentford on May 4 due to a knee injury; the centre-back was initially due to return against Chelsea, but he again missed out, and the Netherlands international was also absent against Tottenham.

A return for the clash with Villa is seen as extremely unlikely but not impossible.

MANCHESTER UNITED’S SUSPENSION LIST

Man United have no players suspended for the Premier League clash.
