Former Manchester United forward Dwight Yorke has suggested an audacious swoop for Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez.

Speculation is rife that the Uruguayan striker could be on his way out of Anfield come summer, with his next club still up in the air. Atletico Madrid is said to be among those eyeing the Premier League striker and might just have an advantage as rumors suggest the former Benfica ace has a soft spot for a move to Spain’s capital.

Talk of interest from Saudi Arabian clubs has also surfaced, yet Nunez appears more inclined to continue his career within Europe. Despite no current links to United, the Red Devils are anticipated to bolster their attacking options following a lacklustre season in front of goal, led by Rasmus Hojlund. United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham on Wednesday, with Mohamed Salah ruthlessly mocking Liverpool’s big rivals.

“He’s not quite lived up to expectations and sometimes a new start might be a good thing for a player, rather than being there and just being another number and getting game time occasionally,” Yorke told gamblingindustrynews.com.

“What I see is an individual wanting a platform to become the top man at the football club. He’s not going to get that with Mo Salah and Virgil van Dijk and the other players who they have there.

“I think for me personally if I was United, I know the Liverpool and the Man United thing is a bit of a rift there, but I look beyond that.

“I look at the young man who has a good presence, who has a little bit of zest in him, who’s got all ingredients to be even better than what he’s actually producing at the minute.”

Nunez made the switch to Liverpool in the summer of 2022, but it seems he’s set to depart Anfield with three years left on his contract.

He netted an impressive 48 goals across all competitions in his last season at Benfica, but hasn’t replicated that form over three seasons with Liverpool. This season, he’s only contributed seven out of his 40 goals for the Reds, often coming off the bench under manager Arne Slot.

Slot has highlighted the need for more firepower following some costly defeats where squad rotation didn’t deliver.

These remarks follow Slot’s previous criticism of Nunez’s attitude during a draw against Aston Villa in February, where the striker squandered a prime opportunity.

“I would prefer him to score but the word ‘chance’ says it all,” Slot said at the time. “It’s a chance so it’s not 100 percent sure that the ball goes in, and players miss chances.

“What was a bit harder for me to accept was his behaviour after that chance. I think it got too much in his head, where he wasn’t the usual Darwin that works his a– off and makes sure he helps the team.”
