Man Utd’s Scott McTominay decision looks worse by the day after polar opposite 24 hours

Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay looked poor on Wednesday evening after their drastically different 24 hours.

Manchester United’s decision to sell Scott McTominay looked particularly poor on Wednesday evening after their drastically different 24 hours.

On Wednesday, United lost 1-0 in the Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao, courtesy of a scrappy first-half Brennan Johnson goal.

The defeat capped off United’s worst season of the Premier League era, with the club trophless and currently languishing in 16th in the Premier League on 39 points with a game to go.

Indeed, with the club in disarray on and off the pitch, some fans have rued last summer’s decision to sell McTominay.

The Scotland international, who came through the United academy, was allowed to leave for just £25million last summer and has since thrived under Antonio Conte at Napoli.

The club are one point clear of Inter Milan at the Serie A summit with one game remaining against Cagliari on Friday night.

But not only is McTominay potentially days away from claiming the first league title of his career, but it was also revealed on Wednesday that he had made the three-man shortlist for Serie A midfielder of the year.

The Scot has been nominated alongside Inter’s Nicolo Barrella and AC Milan’s Tijani Reinders for the award.

McTominay has scored 11 goals in 33 Serie A games for Napoli this term and netted another one in the Coppa Italia. In comparison, he only scored 19 goals in 178 Premier League games for United.

In April, the 28-year-old admitted that he believed he had been misprofiled at United.

“When I got into the first team, I was quite misprofiled in where I was playing,” He told The Athletic. “It wasn’t the fault of any coaches. My strengths have always been getting into the box, scoring goals, being a problem in there.

“But I was being used as a No 6 or a centre-back and that has never really been my game. But when you’re playing for Manchester United and you’re 20, you can’t knock on the manager’s door and say that you expect to be playing at No 8 ahead of Paul Pogba.

“It’s not realistic. You have to know your place, and do what you’re asked to do. In the last few seasons, I began to get into the box a bit more, to score more goals, and then last year was my best one.”
