The Sané saga takes another turn and the winger is now reportedly still open to staying in Munich this summer.
Leroy Sané’s links with Bayern Munich and the amount of time it took for him to finally transfer to the German Rekordmeister from Manchester City was a saga on its own, and in recent weeks, there have been several twists and turns with regards to his future in Munich. As things stand, Sané’s contract is still set to expire at the end of next month, just after the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in the United States.
Bayern has already given the winger a contract extension offer, but his camp has rejected the offer; all just after he had switched agents to Pini Zahavi, who has a history of being difficult with Bayern transfers. Who could forget Uli Hoeneß calling Zahavi a “greedy Piranha” amidst the David Alaba negotiations that ultimately led to the Austrian defender leaving for Real Madrid.
Despite current optics looking like Sané already has one foot out the door in rejecting Bayern’s latest offer, there is now still a possibility he will stay. Per information from Sky Sport reporter Kerry Hau (via @iMiaSanMia), the winger is still open to staying as he gets on well with his teammates and very much feels comfortable at the club. There also are not too many alternative options in the transfer market for Sané, as he does not have any offer from other clubs. Arsenal was one of the clubs showing interest in getting him this summer, but their interest has faded. He was also linked with Chelsea and Manchester City, but there is nothing concrete with either club, nor have there been any developments on either of those fronts.

All things considered, accepting Bayern’s latest offer might be in the best interest of both Sané and the club, especially since he had signaled earlier in the season that he would be more than willing to accept reduced wages and a performance-based contract. Hiring Zahavi could have just been a move to shop the market and see what type of interest is out there to try to leverage for more money in a Bayern extension, but that has not worked thus far if that was, in fact, part of the plan.
A lot of things could still happen, but for now, the understanding is clear; there is not too much interest in Sané from abroad and he could still imagine staying at Bayern. Things could get tricky after the brief break before he will likely be in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany squad for the UEFA Nations League semi-finals against Portugal and final or third place match against France or Spain. Right after that break, the preparations for the Club World Cup begin before the squad travels to North America.
