Tottenham fans spot what Ange Postecoglou tried to do just before the Europa League trophy lift, Guglielmo Vicario was not happy

Ange Postecoglou and his players managed to secure Tottenham a first piece of silverware since 2008 on Wednesday night in Bilbao.

Spurs recorded a 1-0 win over Manchester United to, not only add a trophy to the cabinet, but also secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season, which is some prize when you consider Tottenham are currently 17th in the Premier League.

Ange Postecoglou may not have cut a modest figure when boldly claiming back in September that he “always” wins a trophy in his second season at a club, but the Australian was certainly humble just before the trophy lift.

The 59-year-old was evidently keen to ensure the spotlight focused on his players instead of him just before the Europa League was lifted high into the Bilbao air.

Postecoglou could be seen sticking to the side, before Pedro Porro had to practically drag him into the group, while Guglielmo Vicario could be seen frantically – and almost aggressively – waving for his manager to join in.

One Tottenham fan even called the footage “the most special video of the whole evening” – conceding that the man born in Greece proved them wrong this season.

They wrote: “This is the most special video of the whole evening. Ange proved a lot of people wrong, me included. Would be happy to give him another season.”

Another Spurs fan added that they would be happy to have Postecoglou in place as manager “forever” – writing on X (previously known as Twitter): “I’ve seen enough, I want this guy leading us forever.”

A third Tottenham fan simply laughed out loud at the video, posting: “Loool we honestly cannot sack this man.”

That could still happen, with Fabio Paratici already identifying four options for Tottenham after a difficult domestic campaign.

A fourth Spurs supporter made a comparison between Erik ten Hag and Postecoglou, writing: “When Ten Hag had a bad league season and finished it with the FA Cup, my instinct was he still needed to go.

“With Ange it’s different. I don’t know why, but I feel sacking him would be a setback.”

Last but not least, two more Tottenham fans highlighted how Vicario and Porro acted after seeing what Postecoglou was trying to do.

One wrote that “Vic wasn’t having any of it” as the Italian, as aforesaid, aggressively waved his arm towards his manager, almost ordering him to get amongst the group and celebrate with them.

Another fan called Porro “a good soul” as the Spain international was more hands-on with Postecoglou, hugging the Tottenham boss before basically walking him into the group.

All season, the man born in Nea Filadelfeia has deflected blame from his players, absorbing criticism in press conferences, while his now famous quote regarding silverware almost seemed to distract the media from piling on to his underperforming squad.

Postecoglou – who Gareth Bale called a legend – has been like a father figure, when he had every right to lambast his players at many times throughout the season, so it was good to see him dragged into the trophy celebrations.
