Newcastle host Everton as the Premier League season stages its finale on Sunday afternoon.
Eddie Howe‘s side were beaten by Arsenal last time out in a defeat that denied them the chance to seal a top-five finish.
That has meant they head into their last game of the season still needing more to book a spot among Europe’s elite.
The Magpies face an Everton side that said an emotional goodbye to their home, Goodison Park, last weekend.
David Moyes‘ men don’t have anything to play for, and that should play right into Newcastle’s hands…
What do Newcastle need to qualify for the Champions League?
If Newcastle beat Everton at St James’ Park, the job is done.
The Magpies currently occupy a place in the top five, so they know that one more win will see them reach the Champions League.
In fact, they could even finish the season in third place if Manchester City slip up.
A draw for Newcastle against Everton could also be good enough, depending on other results.
If Chelsea and Aston Villa fail to win and Toon are held to a point, that would still see them qualify.
A loss could see Newcastle drop all the way out of the Champions League places into sixth, depending on results.
But, if Everton come away with three points and Villa lose too, then Howe’s men would fortunately stay in the top five.
Newcastle vs Everton: Team news
Alexander Isak remains a big doubt for Newcastle’s final game of the season after missing the defeat to Arsenal.
The striker didn’t feature at all against the Gunners and now could be forced to sit out again this weekend.
It would mean Callum Wilson starts in what could be his final game for the club, while Sven Botman should be fit.
Lewis Hall, Kieran Trippier, Joelinton and Matt Targett are out.
As for Everton, James Tarkowski, Orel Mangala and Jesper Lindstrom are the expected absentees.
Seamus Coleman has a knock, while Abdoulaye Doucoure should start in his last game as a Toffee.
Newcastle vs Everton: What has been said?
Newcastle boss Howe spoke about the tense Champions League race last week before losing to Arsenal.
He said: “It’s not done yet. The picture can change game-to-game.
“I think we’ve got to be really focused on our next game and trying to win it.
“Our preparation has been good and the focus is there from the players. Nothing is achieved until it’s achieved.
“We have to be single-minded in that, and not get distracted.”
