Who is Benjamin Sesko? $113M RB Leipzig forward claimed to be ‘open’ to signing for Arne Slot

With Darwin Nunez having fallen down the pecking order under Arne Slot and Diogo Jota having had an inconsistent season, Liverpool could do with a new number nine arriving this summer.

But the Reds are not the only club looking for a new striker. Arsenal and Chelsea have both been looking for someone reliable in front of goal for some time too, and RB Leipzig ace Benjamin Sesko has been persistently linked with the Premier League trio.

The 21-year-old started 30 out of 34 games in the Bundesliga this season. Sesko has scored 21 goals in all competitions in the current campaign, following on from 18 the year before.

According to DaveOCKOP, Liverpool could sell Nunez and put the money back into Sesko. And the player is said to be open to making the move and joining up with Slot at Anfield.

Valued at $113 million (£84 million), though, he would not be cheap. Would he be worth such a fee? And what kind of player is he?

“I like [Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo] Ekitike more in the sense that there’s a lot to like about Sesko, but I think Ekitike is a bit less predictable,” Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard told This Is Anfield this week.

“Sesko’s brilliant and I think somebody’s going to get a really, really good striker there. I just wonder if Ekitike, in the fullness of time, just with the variety of things he can do, will just be less predictable and more difficult to pin down.

“But, Sesko, once he gets moving, has pace, power, height, all that stuff. Sesko’s probably better in the air, but they’re both really interesting players.”

Earlier this week, Spanish radio station Cadena SAR claimed that Atletico Madrid would be the preferred destination for Nunez, with a “verbal agreement” for the Uruguayan said to be already in place. He also has interest from Saudi Arabia.

And Slot has already admitted that his focus has switched to the summer with the league title wrapped up.

“If I look at the way we think about next season and our squad, these are things that are on my mind,” he said recently.

“I think we can find one or two extra weapons that this team doesn’t have. That is what we are trying to achieve. That will make us only stronger.”

Jeremie Frimpong is expected to be one arrival from the Bundesliga this season, while his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz is also of interest to Liverpool. Sesko could be another player being monitored in Germany.
