Gareth Bale was one of many Tottenham Hotspur fans absolutely elated in Bilbao on Wednesday evening.
Ange Postecoglou came good on his promise of winning a trophy in his second season and Tottenham were victorious in the Europa League final.
It wasn’t a spectacular display — neither Spurs nor Manchester United could really get going from an attacking point of view.
However, Tottenham scored through Brennan Johnson and had their hands on the trophy at full-time, and that’s ultimately all that mattered.
Yves Bissouma was brilliant for Spurs and Postecoglou’s side once again showed a real maturity in European competition, something you wouldn’t necessarily say domestically.
Gareth Bale gives his Ange Postecoglou verdict
That being said, Bale was on hand to give his immediate reaction to Tottenham’s win whilst covering the game for TNT Sports.
Whilst pictures of the Europa League trophy were being shown with Tottenham’s name being etched in, Bale was asked to say a few words.
And after saying how ‘delighted’ he was for Spurs fans who have waited so long for a trophy, he then also spoke about Postecoglou’s spot in Tottenham’s history books.
Bale said: “Amazing for the club, it’s been a long time coming. Absolutely delighted for the club, all of the fans, the amount of years they’ve waited, I think they’ll celebrate this one tonight.
“Now Ange goes down as a legendary manager to win the European cup so you’ll look back on this like I said at the start of the programme in 10 years and you’ll just see Tottenham winning the Europa League — you won’t see anything else in terms of what positions.”
Brennan Johnson praises Tottenham fans
Also on TNT Sports’ coverage, Johnson wanted to praise Tottenham’s fans in Bilbao, who he thought were crucial to the win.
The Welshman confessed that they were superior to those travelling from Manchester, and the Spurs star thanked them for their efforts all season.
Johnson said: “The fans have been so good, every home game, every away game and then coming in here, I just thought they had the edge on the United fans to be honest.
“Ever since we got to the stadium, we literally walked out hours before and they were all here, singing our names — yeah it got us through the game.”
And if that wasn’t enough, Mohamed Salah sent Tottenham a congratulatory message too straight after full-time.
