Tottenham have done the quadruple on Manchester United this term, beating them twice in the Premier League, in the Carabao Cup and, most important of all, in the Europa League final.

Both Spurs and Man United have endured dismal campaigns on the domestic front, however, and they will be eager to strengthen their ranks and improve their league standing.

Now, we can reveal Tottenham are confident about winning the race for a player both sides have been keen on signing this summer.

TBR Football chief correspondent Graeme Bailey understands from Tottenham sources that Spurs are confident of winning the battle for Angel Gomes‘ signature.

We previously confirmed in April that Spurs were pushing to land Gomes and watched him in action in Lille’s Ligue 1 loss to Lyon.

The England international has fielded offers from across Europe as clubs seek to sign one of the French top flight’s best players on a free transfer.

However, Tottenham are Gomes’ local side, the player having grown up in North London, and a move to Spurs would see him return home.

Man United, West Ham and Aston Villa have also been keeping tabs on Gomes this season, TBR Football previously confirmed.

Why Tottenham fans should be thrilled about potential Angel Gomes signing

Gomes is a player of the highest calibre, who has proven himself at the highest level and is now a senior England international.

He is a superb passer of the ball and has been deemed similar to the likes of John McGinn, Emile Smith Rowe and Dominik Szoboszlai, as per FBRef.

“Angel is maybe the most intelligent player I have in my team,” Paulo Fonseca previously said of Gomes.

“He understands faster than the others everything about the game, he loves the game, he loves to learn and he is a player with big skills, big technique.”

Meanwhile, French football expert Julien Laurens said of Gomes last year: “He’s one of the best players in Ligue 1, there’s no doubt.

“The fans love him; a player that you enjoy watching because he’s just so elegant, so creative, such a great touch.

“If you know your football, you know that teams need players like Angel Gomes that make everything click and make everything happen.”

And Jonathan Panzo, his former teammate at England youth level, said: “Angel was always spoken about highly because he’s quality as a player.

“You hear about someone, then you get to see it and you are like ‘they weren’t lying about this player’.

“He is definitely one of the best players I have played with… he’s like a magician.

“He’s a small player, but his IQ is so smart and he just knows how to get around the pitch.”
