Liverpool legend Jurgen Klopp is back on Merseyside for the first time since leaving last summer. And the Anfield hero has sent a message ahead of a huge weekend for the club.

Attending the LFC Foundation gala dinner, he said in a video posted on social media: “So, I’m back here in the wonderful cathedral. It took me a year to find a way back, but now I am here!

“What a weekend ahead. I heard that the city will be buzzing. I’m pretty sure it will. And I see it from a different perspective, from a very good perspective from your perspective.

“I told you on my last day, from now on I will be one of you. Yeah, OK. Standing in a black suit is maybe not the best example! But at the weekend, I will try to be part of it as much as you let me.

“Congratulations for last season. Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic. I enjoyed it so much. Congratulations to the team and to Arne Slot especially. What a guy, and what a coach.

“And yeah. Let’s have the best weekend of our lives… so far. Because loads of great weekends will follow with this wonderful team and this great club. See you. Bye!”

Earlier in the day, Slot had confirmed that Klopp will attend this weekend’s game with Crystal Palace, after which Virgil van Dijk will lift the Premier League trophy. On Monday, there will be a parade around the city center.

“There’s a lot of — how do you call it? — I won’t say dreaming because it will be a reality but I can picture it and it will be a very emotional day,” Van Dijk told reporters at Stamford Bridge earlier this month.

“My family will be there, my mum, my wife, my kids. But until we get there, we must keep focusing on the games ahead of us and try to win the last three games in front of us.

“Hopefully [it will be] even better than what we had after the Champions League final. I already encouraged everyone to wear red in the last game and keep doing that for the rest of the season because everyone saw how amazing it was.

“For so many fans and people that have been going to Anfield for so many years, it was one of their best days ever.

“Hopefully the 25th will top that and the parade will be even more crazy than ever and there will be even more people coming from around the world to be in Liverpool to come and be with us.”

Klopp left behind a strong roster of players for Slot, who has taken them to a new level. When the title was confirmed, the latter made sure to point to his predecessor, singing his name at Anfield as the German had for him around a year earlier.
