The Bavarians are said to be on the hunt for a ‘star’ caliber player at left wing instead of central attacking midfield.

The tides, they are a-changin’.

Following Florian Wirtz’s rejection and reportedly impending transfer to from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool FC, Bayern Munich is set to re-focus its summer plans elsewhere in the attack.

From Sky Sport DE, as captured by @iMiaSanMia:

After Florian Wirtz’s rejection, Bayern are no longer expected to go for another #10 alongside Jamal Musiala. Instead, the focus has now shifted to getting a left winger with ‘star quality’ who would be an immediate starter. At least one departure in the position is expected this summer (Sané/Coman) [@SkySportDE]

BFW Analysis

This is probably the right move.

As exciting a player as Florian Wirtz is, he is moving at peak value right now. That’s not to say he can’t go on and raise his stock even higher, becoming one of the best players of the world — but €150M is a lot to throw down on any one player, even for a superstar caliber No. 10 to a team with a big glaring need at the No. 10 (see: Manchester City).

And Bayern? Bayern is a team that has Jamal Musiala. Who could move to left wing, but doesn’t need to. And when you look across that Bayern front line and see the likes of Musiala, Olise, and Harry Kane…another half-space player to pull the strings is not the very first thing that comes to mind.

A lethal winger who could perhaps combine the best of Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman, and Serge Gnabry, though? A player who can make those runs in behind for Kane or Musiala or Olise to supply? That might be just the ticket.

Bayern’s loss on Wirtz stings. He was, by all accounts, the apple of everybody’s eye in Munich. But if this apparent pivot away from his profile is true — and it makes logical sense — he wasn’t a glaring team need anyway. That was never the kind of player a fiscally responsible club gets into an astronomical bidding war over.

Now to answer the next question. Who is?
