In the last Matchday of the Serie A against Cagliari being toe-to-toe against Inter Milan, Scott McTominay scored and acrobatic volley to send Napoli to the top of the league.

Napoli entered Matchday 38 of the 2024–25 Serie A season with a narrow one-point lead over Inter Milan, setting the stage for a dramatic title-deciding weekend. And when it mattered most, Scott McTominay delivered—with an acrobatic volley that helped send Napoli to the top of the table.

Heading into the final day, Napoli sat first with 79 points, while Inter trailed closely with 78. Antonio Conte’s side struck first, taking the lead against Como in the 20th minute to temporarily leapfrog Napoli in the standings. But the Partenopei quickly answered back.

In the 42nd minute, with Cagliari sitting deep and trying to hold the scoreline, Matteo Politano delivered an accurate cross to the center of the area. The ball found Scottish star McTominay, who pulled out an acrobatic volley to start giving Napoli the third Serie A title in the club’s history.

Napoli doubled their lead in the 51st minute after a long ball from defender Amir Rrahmani. Romelu Lukaku held off Yerry Mina near midfield, then launched a brilliant solo run. After nutmegging the Colombian defender, Lukaku burst into the box and slotted home a clinical finish to make it 2–0.

From Manchester United discard to Napoli hero: The rise of Scott McTominay

Almost a year ago, McTominay was a fringe player at Manchester United, even starting the season on the bench in the Community Shield. But on 2024’s summer transfer deadline day, Napoli completed a $33 million move for the Scottish midfielder—seen by many as a gamble at the time.

Fast forward to the end of the season, and McTominay has turned into one of Serie A’s standout performers. Under Antonio Conte’s guidance, he reinvented himself as a box-to-box force—and even a clutch goal scorer. He finished the campaign with 12 goals and 6 assists in 35 appearances, including several match-winning performances down the stretch.
