Now the story is coming together…

As fans are lamenting Florian Wirtz’s decision to choose Liverpool FC over Bayern Munich, more and more of the story to how it happened is dropping.

According to a report from kicker journalist Georg Holzner (as captured by @iMiaSanMiia), the club’s plan for Wirtz was likely considered to be inconsistent as two factions within the Bayern Munich had differing ideas on how Wirtz could be used:

Bayern had conflicting ideas about how they were going to plan with Florian Wirtz, which made the player reluctant and ultimately deterred him. On the one hand, Vincent Kompany and his staff were planning to switch to a 4-1-4-1 formation, with Musiala and Wirtz as two #10’s (this plan was also reported by @Plettigoal and @SPORT1). On the other hand, the club’s bosses saw Wirtz as THE #10 and central element in Bayern’s game, with Michael Olise on the right wing and Jamal Musiala on the left.

While, as is often the case, there were differing views at Bayern, Liverpool, on the other hand, outlined a highly professional and appealing plan for Wirtz, which matters the most to the player. He is set to become the new central figure in midfield at Liverpool as a playmaker, with Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister behind him.

Last November, when Leverkusen faced Liverpool at Anfield and lost 4-0 – according to people close to the player, Wirtz was extremely impressed by the atmosphere, the environment, and the club itself. Far more than he was impressed by his visits to Munich, where, unlike Liverpool, the environment and the players were familiar to him. Although his father, Hans, had preferred a move to Bayern at one point.

If Liverpool’s Arne Slot truly presented a singular option on what the vision for Wirtz might be, the inconsistencies at Bayern Munich might have raised a red flag and pushed the Germany international to look closer at a move to England.

The news that Bayern Munich had coughed up the Florian Wirtz transfer was shocking. Even more stunning was that it was Liverpool FC, who ultimately won the Germany international’s heart. So…what next? Let’s rehash how it all went down, why it happened, and then talk about what might on tap next for the Bavarians, who have to start their transfer dealings all over again.
