Manchester United’s humiliating season is close to coming to an end, and Ruben Amorim has now made two major decisions in a private dressing room meeting following the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham.
United’s season has been nothing short of disastrous with the club currently sitting 16th in the Premier League, on course to have their worst-ever finish in the modern era.
Their last chance to salvage the season was ended in Bilbao, with Spurs emerging as 1-0 winners to win their first major trophy in 17 years.
Ruben Amorim’s future at Manchester United remained a talking point, especially after the manager came out and offered to walk away from the club without compensation after the Europa League defeat.
However, the latest developments suggest that the Man United manager addressed the squad behind closed doors after the defeat, and made two big decisions in front of the players, including a major update on Alejandro Garnacho.
Chelsea now in pole position to sign Alejandro Garnacho
According to The Athletic, Ruben Amorim held a private meeting with the Manchester United squad at Carrington on Saturday, where he informed Garnacho in front of his teammates that he should start looking for a new club.
This comes after Garnacho expressed his frustration after the defeat to Spurs, having started the game on the bench.
After the game, he told the reporters: “It’s hard for everyone. The season was s—, both now losing the final tonight, and in the league, where we didn’t beat anyone, that’s the truth.
“Up until the final, I’ve played every round, and today to play 20 minutes… I don’t know. I’m going to try to enjoy the summer and see what happens after.”
Garnacho had already fallen out of favour with Amorim earlier in the season. The United boss banished both him and Marcus Rashford from the squad back in December due to disciplinary concerns.
While the Argentine earned his way back into the team with a strong response, his future at the club remained uncertain.
Chelsea showed strong interest in signing Garnacho in January but the deal did not materialise. However, the interest from the Blues remains strong.
With Amorim now telling Garnacho to find a new club, Chelsea will find themselves in a good position to secure the Argentine’s transfer, however, he is set to cost them a fee close to £70m.
TBR Football has recently reported that Chelsea remain in contact with Garnacho’s agent over a potential move.
Ruben Amorim makes decision on Manchester United future
The second major decision Amorim communicated to his players during the meeting was that he will remain in charge going into next season.
It’s been a nightmare start to life at Old Trafford for the Portuguese coach, who replaced Erik ten Hag in November 2024.
The former Sporting Lisbon manager underestimated how bad things were at the club, and has been brutally critical of the club’s poor state, something Amorim has been criticised for by Danny Murphy.
And after his comments following the Europa League defeat, hinting at walking away, there were speculations regarding his future.
However, it now appears Amorim is prepared to stay and take on the challenge, with INEOS expected to back him in the transfer market.
It has been reported that Man United aim to sign five new players at least. The first signing could very well be Matheus Cunha, with strong suggestions that Cunha could sign for United next week.
