Liverpool FC coach Arne Slot was reportedly ‘crucial’ in the German superstar’s decision.
How did Liverpool FC suddenly beat Bayern Munich to the punch for Florian Wirtz?
According to a report from German outlet Sport1, it wasn’t primarily money or salary or even Bayer Leverkusen’s desire to send their man out of Germany and beyond the Bundesliga.
Instead, it was Reds coach Arne Slot — who, like his Bayern counterpart Vincent Kompany, won his league in his first season at the helm.
As captured by @iMiaSanMia:
Bayern were leading the race for Florian Wirtz for a long time. Uli Hoeneß has always kept a positive exchange with the player’s family. But in the end, Wirtz’s decision to join Liverpool had to do with one man in particular. LFC coach Arne Slot was a crucial factor. In a personal meeting, the Dutchman was extremely convincing and outlined a very clear sporting plan to Wirtz, which the latter was very enthusiastic about. On the other hand, Bayern had also shown Wirtz a sporting path for the future, but they were not entirely convincing, as from Wirtz’s point of view a few questions still remained unanswered. Money didn’t play a big role. In terms of salary, the two offers were on a very similar level [@StefanKumberger, @Carsten_Arndt]
What were those questions? That’s a question that will burn in Bayern fans’ minds for a long time. Vincent Kompany’s high energy, high-pressing style would seem to suit the creative playmaker perfectly. And Wirtz already has formed a partnership with Jamal Musiala for Germany.
But in the end Musiala is another superstar-caliber player currently — and at least arguably ideally — operating at the No. 10 position. Liverpool do not have the same. One thing is for sure. How Slot employs his new superstar is going to be a burning question for the summer.
So, too, the question of where Bayern turns its transfer spend priorities.
