Arne Slot had a slow first transfer window at Liverpool, but he’s now making up for lost time.
Indeed, Liverpool have already been busy in this summer transfer window so far.
Jeremie Frimpong has already joined the Reds, while Armin Pecsi is also through the door as a young goalkeeping option.
On top of that, Milos Kerkez looks set to join Liverpool at some point, while the Merseyside club could be set to break the British transfer record to sign Florian Wirtz.
Wirtz has been strongly linked to Liverpool, and speaking on ESPN, Steve Nicol has been discussing this potential deal.
The pundit was asked if €150m (£127m) was too much money for Wirtz, and he shared an interesting response.

Steve Nicol says Florian Wirtz fee is ridiculous
Nicol spoke about Wirtz and how much Liverpool are set to pay to sign the German.
The pundit says that €150m for any footballer is a ridiculous amount of money, but he notes that the market has gone such a way in that you have to pay that sort of fee if you want to land a top player.
“Is Wirtz overvalued at €150m?” Nicol was asked.
“It depends where you are coming from, there are a number of ways to look at it €150m for a football player is a ridiculous amount of money, but that’s what the market dictates. So you can’t say he’s overvalued, the value of anything is only what someone is willing to pay for it,” Nicol said.
Most expensive signings in Premier League history compared to Florian Wirtz
£127m for Wirtz is a remarkable amount of money, but when you weigh everything up, it does sound about right for a player of this ability.
Indeed, when you compare Wirtz to the most expensive players in Premier League history, you can see where this fee has come from.
Most expensive Premier League signings | Fee | Club signed from |
Florian Wirtz – Liverpool | £127m | Bayer Leverkusen |
Moises Caicedo – Chelsea | £115m | Brighton |
Enzo Fernandez – Chelsea | £107m | Benfica |
Declan Rice – Arsenal | £105m | West Ham |
Jack Grealish – Man City | £100m | Aston Villa |
Enzo Fernandez had only played a handful of games in Europe when he moved to Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice were unproven at the very top level having only played for Brighton and West Ham respectively before their big-money moves.
Meanwhile, Wirtz has already won some of the biggest trophies available to him with Bayer Leverkusen, while he’s a key player for Germany too.
£127m is a massive transfer fee, but you can see how both Liverpool and Leverkusen can justify spending this amount of cash on a player like this.
