Sterling’s unhappy loan move

By common consent Raheem Sterling’s loan move to Arsenal has been a failure.

Signed on deadline day on loan for the season, the England winger has looked a shadow of the player that won four league titles during his time at Manchester City, shorn of confidence and no longer able to dribble past opponents.

Meant to help supplement the Gunners’ attacking options, instead he has managed just one goal, and that was in the EFL Cup against League One opponents Bolton Wanderers.

In addition, he has taken one of the two spots allowed in the squad for Premier League players, which restricted the club’s ability to operate in the January transfer market.

If there is a consolation it is that Chelsea have been paying half of his considerable weekly wage since he has been at the Emirates.

With the chances of the Sterling move being made permanent virtually non-existent, he will head back to Chelsea at the end of the season, who will try to sell him.

However, after his stay in North London, his market value will have been substantially eroded
