‘At the end of the day’: Rafael van der Vaart shares what Tottenham have been doing wrong that needs to stop

Tottenham Hotspur are not having the best of seasons as they sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table and are out of both domestic cups.

Admittedly, Spurs have been hamstrung by injuries, but with players now coming back, their form has improved somewhat.

Tottenham are also still in the Europa League, so there’s still a chance for them to end a trophy drought that stretches back to 2008.

Spurs cult hero Rafael van der Vaart has now shared what he thinks the Lilywhites have been doing wrong and how they can fix this.

Rafael van der Vaart says Tottenham must stop overpaying for ‘normal’ players

Van der Vaart has revealed that he believes Tottenham must stop overpaying for ‘normal’ players.

Instead, Spurs should be prepared to spend more for those who will take them to the next level, claimed the Dutchman.

“At the end of the day, I think Tottenham always tried to go to the next level, but the last step is the biggest,” Van der Vaart told talkSPORT.

“Of course, you can build a new stadium and everything is perfect.

“If you compare it to my time, we were still on the Chigwell training ground and everything was smaller.

“White Hart Lane, which for me, was the best ambience I ever played in. Now, everything is big. You want to go to the next step and you don’t play like that.

“At the end of the day, they bought so many players for crazy money in my point of view.

“You can buy less players and buy better ones and pay a little bit more. But now these days, they pay money for normal players.”

Ange Postecoglou’s signings at Tottenham so far

Since taking the reins at Tottenham in June 2023, Postecoglou has made 19 signings to date.

Most of them have been pretty successful so far, while others are more for the future, and there are few that could be considered flops.

Brennan Johnson – £47.5m
James Maddison – £40m
Pedro Porro – £40m
Micky Van de Ven – £43m
Dejan Kulusevski – £25.6m
Guglielmo Vicario – £17m
Radu Dragusin – £26.7m
Timo Werner – loan
Dominic Solanke – £65m
Archie Gray – £30m
Wilson Odobert – £25m
Lucas Bergvall – £8.5m
Alejo Veliz – £13m
Ashley Phillips – £2m
Manor Solomon – free
Yang Min-hyeok – £1m
Antonin Kinsky – £12.5m
Kevin Danso – loan
Mathys Tel – loan

There have already been some major success stories, such as Pedro Porro, Micky van de Ven, Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and Dejan Kulusevski.

Only Timo Werner can be said to have had little impact at Spurs, while most of the others have either been decent enough or still have time to prove themselves.

Postecoglou is known for usually getting things right in the market, so while Tottenham haven’t done too well in terms of signings in previous years, it looks like things could be changing.
