‘Listen’: Declan Rice has a point to make about Ethan Nwaneri after Arsenal’s 7-1 win over PSV

4 Min Read

Both Declan Rice and Ethan Nwaneri were at the heart of a momentous win for Arsenal against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League.

In what could have been a nervy night for Mikel Arteta’s side, Arsenal dominated PSV once the home side squandered an early good chance to go ahead.

Once Ismael Saibari missed his opportunity and hit the woodwork, Arsenal clicked into gear and set all kinds of Champions League records whilst romping to a 7-1 win away from home.

Of course, Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard deserves a ton of credit for his display – the Norwegian was at the heart of everything good for the Gunners, explaining why he scored twice.

Although, when it came to making a difference early on in the game, Nwaneri was front and centre of all of Arsenal’s good work as well.

Declan Rice say’s Ethan Nwaneri’s ability is ‘crazy’ after PSV win

That being said, Rice was asked about Nwaneri’s performance when speaking to Amazon Prime Sport at full-time, appearing alongside Jurrien Timber.

Understandably, Rice was blown away by his young teammate who continues to deliver performances that Bukayo Saka would be proud of on the right, even though he’s only 17-year-old.

And when praising Nwaneri, Rice also gave a mention to Myles Lewis-Skelly, who was perhaps fortunate not to be sent off for a second yellow in the first half.

Rice said: “Top, he’s 17-years-old, playing on the biggest stage in football, it’s crazy, we seem him every day, all of the lads have taken him under our wing – same with Myles.

“And they deserve to be playing, you should see them train – they have no fear they way they want to come and perform – he was brilliant tonight.

“Listen, even if Saka was still here, Ethan would still be in and around the team getting minutes because, trust me, he trains that well and he’s that good.

“He’s with us, same with Myles, even though he come off with the yellow card. We’ve got two youngsters and plenty more coming through who are so good.”

Mikel Arteta can already prepare for Champions League quarter-final

Of course, it seems safe to say that Arsenal will now face one of the Madrid sides in the quarter-final of the competition.

Arsenal are extremely unlikely to surrender a six goal lead at the Emirates Stadium next week when Arteta will have a chance to shuffle his pack.

Rice himself seriously impressed Arsenal fans in Eindhoven, where Arteta’s players will spend the night before heading back to north London.

A brilliant evening for Arsenal all round, who were also able to avoid any injury issues on their successful trip to the Netherlands.

All eyes will now be on Sunday’s tie with Manchester United, when Arsenal need to keep their new found momentum going.
