‘I think’: Paul Scholes tells Ruben Amorim exactly what he needs to do with Rasmus Hojlund at Man United

Rasmus Hojlund has now gone 13 games without a Premier League goal for Manchester United under Ruben Amorim.

Hojlund arrived at Old Trafford back in 2023 in a big money move to Man United during Erik ten Hag’s time in charge of the club.

And after a relatively promising first season at the club in which he scored 16 goals in all competitions, the Dane has now found it tough this term.

Hojlund has just seven goals in 37 appearances this campaign, with only two of those coming in his 23 Premier League matches.

Prior to Amorim’s arrival, many thought that Hojlund could thrive as the central striker in the former Sporting CP manager’s 3-4-3, however that hasn’t been the case so far.

Paul Scholes suggests that Rasmus Hojlund can come good for Man United

That being said, speaking after United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in which Hojlund only made a brief cameo as a substitute, Paul Scholes gave his interpretation of what should happen next with the striker.

Scholes played alongside a ton of successful strikers at Old Trafford, and he’ll realise as much as anyone that confidence plays a key role for any number nine.

And when speaking to Stadium Astro, Scholes actually thought that Amorim simply needs to keep playing Hojlund and hope for some luck.

Scholes said: “I think you have just got to keep playing him and hope at some point that he gets a bit of luck – one bounces off his backside or something.

“Because I really get the feeling that the talent is there, he’s a young centre-forward on his own as I said, he’s the only centre-forward that the club have got.

“[Joshua] Zirkzee – I’m not quite sure what Zirkzee is yet, is he a nine? He didn’t look like a number nine today, his hold up play wasn’t quite good enough – probably a number ten.

“So Hojlund for me he has to keep playing, I think eventually he will end up getting chances and he will end up scoring goals.”

Rasmus Hojlund’s goalscoring record at Man United compared with previous clubs

Of course, it is important to remember that Hojlund is only 22-years-old – he’s still got a ton of development to come.

And it seems clear that the Denmark international would have benefited from arriving at the club as second-choice to a more experienced number nine initially.

Sturm Graz 21 12
Atalanta 34 10
Manchester United 80 23

Whilst Hojlund’s strike rate has worsened since his days in Italy with Atalanta, it’s not anything too drastic.

Wayne Rooney said Hojlund needed more help when watching him recently – it’s certainly not a question of the striker’s workrate.

A difficult situation, but there’s still reason to believe that Hojlund can score goals with the right set up around him.
