‘I will’: Arne Slot made promise to Liverpool fans when he was first appointed that has already come true

5 Min Read

After 29 games played for Liverpool in the league, it now looks almost certain that Arne Slot will lift the Premier League trophy in his first season at the club.

Liverpool are now 15 points clear of Arsenal, even if the north Londoners do have one game in hand.

In the face of the pressure that comes with replacing a manager like Jurgen Klopp, Slot has appeared calm, collected and clever.

Without making significant changes to the playing staff at Anfield, Slot has carefully transitioned Liverpool into what many consider as a more sustainable brand of football – it’s not heavy metal but the reds are still top of the pops.

Slot has made subtle changes to how Liverpool use the ball, and he’s actually stayed true to a message he delivered when he was first appointed as Klopp’s successor.

Arne Slot told Liverpool fans what he would immediately do at Anfield

Speaking in his first interview for Liverpool last summer, Slot was asked to send a message to fans at the end of a long question and answer session with the club.

The Dutchman said he was a little surprised by the request – one he perhaps hadn’t prepared for.

But Slot promised to do ‘everything within my interest in power’ to lead Liverpool forward, something he’s definitely done.

Replying to the final question of the interview, Slot said: “You surprised me a bit on this one!

“There is a change but the change hopefully isn’t that big, because we still have the same players, we still have the same fans – and if the both of them are going to do the same job, that will make my life a lot more easy!

“I’m expecting them to show up again in the upcoming season, and the same for the players. I will do everything within my interest and power to lead the team in the best possible way.”

Arne Slot’s Liverpool side compared to Jurgen Klopp’s team last season

It would be slightly redundant to compare Slot’s first season at the club to Klopp’s – the German inherited a much weaker squad when he replaced Brendan Rodgers.

But given that Liverpool’s squad has hardly changed since Klopp’s final season, it is interesting to compare some metrics between last campaign and thus.

Evidently, Slot’s Liverpool side have improved dramatically, even if their point totals are very similar.

Liverpool are now conceding less chances and creating more goal scoring opportunities – a good way to win football matches.

And whilst Klopp’s side faltered towards the end of the season and finished third, Slot’s team should go all the way and be crowned as champions of England.
