‘Never write them off’: Gary Neville predicts whether Liverpool will actually win the UCL ahead of PSG clash

4 Min Read

Liverpool are in strong contention to win three trophies this season: the Premier League, the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.

Arne Slot could already be on course to become a Reds legend if he just wins the league but winning a double alongside the Carabao Cup in his debut campaign may well cement his status as one.

But Liverpool’s next game is against Paris Saint-Germain, as they lead 1-0 after the first leg of the Champions League last-16 and the Dutchman will be wary of the threat posed by Luis Enrique’s side.

Slot knew Liverpool would struggle against PSG and while that did transpire as they were dominated at the Parc Des Princes, Harvey Elliott’s late winner has made them favourites to go through to the quarter-finals. But Arne Slot will be aware that the tie is far from done and a repeat of his side’s performance in the French capital would most likely lead to them exiting the competition.

Gary Neville says Liverpool won’t win the Champions League

Initially, Neville mentioned that Anfield will be rocking when PSG come to town.

The pundit said on The Gary Neville Podcast: “It’ll be a hell of a game at Anfield this week, it’ll be a brilliant game, I mean, the atmosphere will be sensational. Liverpool will be right up for it.”

However, Gary Neville feels that Liverpool will not win the Champions League this season and claimed that PSG have just as much of a chance of winning at Anfield.

“And then obviously, the Champions League is a different story. That’s a different story. I’m not quite sure I see Liverpool winning the Champions League, you can never write them off in that competition but I can’t quite see it.”

“It wouldn’t actually surprise me if they went out this week. PSG, I think it’s a 50-50 game, Liverpool could easily win but so could PSG, PSG are a good side.”

Liverpool’s Anfield record in the Champions League second leg

Whether Gary Neville is indeed proven right about Liverpool in the Champions League remains to be seen but for the time being, all eyes will be on their heavyweight clash against PSG.

The major disadvantage that the Parisians have is a visit to Anfield in the second leg of a knockout game in the Champions League is historically one hell of a challenge.

But the hope for PSG is that in Europe’s elite competition, three teams have won in Merseyside during the second leg of such ties.

SEASON OPPONENT RESULT STAGE
2001/2002 BAYER LEVERKUSEN 1-2 QUARTER-FINAL
2019/2020 ATLETICO MADRID 2-3 (AET) ROUND OF 16
2022/2023 REAL MADRID 0-1 QUARTER-FINAL

Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid have beaten Liverpool at Anfield in the quarter-finals in 2002 and 2023 respectively while Atletico Madrid did the same in the last-16 in 2020.

Such results will give PSG the hope that they can do the same as well and based on how they played against the Premier League leaders last week, the mission at hand is certainly not impossible.
