Bayer Leverkusen’s task just got harder…
As expected, Bayer Leverkusen ace Florian Wirtz will miss the Champions League match against Bayern Munich on Tuesday. In addition, Wirtz will also be unavailable for the German national team for its upcoming UEFA Nations League quarterfinals vs. Italy.
Wirtz was already suspended for the first match of Germany’s tie with Italy, but will now miss the return leg as well. Bayer Leverkusen dropped the news on its club website via this release:
Bayer 04 will have to manage without Florian Wirtz. The Germany international suffered a ligament injury in his right ankle in the home game against Werder Bremen (0-2) on Saturday. That was the diagnosis from an MRI scan following the game. The 21-year-old midfielder will be out of action for several weeks.
Wirtz was brought on at the start of the second half but had to go off after a foul on 59 minutes.
“The loss of Florian obviously hits us hard in this phase of the season but we will compensate for him with a strong squad,” said Simon Rolfes, Bayer 04 sporting managing director. “We know Florian and also know he will come back as soon as possible. Everybody will support him in that. We are assuming he will be fully fit again for the end of the season run-in.”
