Virgil van Dijk would have been distraught after Liverpool were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the Champions League Round of 16.

Van Dijk could leave Liverpool at the end of the season and he may well have played his last game in Europe’s elite competition for the Reds if he does decide to part ways in the summer.

But focusing on the present, Virgil van Dijk would have been desperate for Liverpool to beat PSG considering they headed into the second leg with a 1-0 lead and playing at Anfield.

But Luis Enrique’s side pulled off a famous victory in Merseyside and on the basis of both legs, they were the deserved winners.

Virgil van Dijk sent “chin up” message to Liverpool players after PSG loss

Van Dijk initially reviewed Liverpool’s loss against PSG while speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport, saying: “It was a very intense great game of football, I think to be part of it as well. It was totally there for Liverpool and what we showed in Paris and unfortunately were out on penalties and that is the reality.”

“I think in the first half we created dangerous moments and they have the quality as well, and then it comes down to penalties.”

However, Van Dijk revealed that after PSG’s win, he told his Liverpool teammates to keep their chins up and look ahead to their upcoming games.

“It’s part of football, I said to the guys, obviously, you can be disappointed because we’re out of the competition, but chin up and get ready for the next challenge, a beautiful one on the weekend.

“I think we were pretty good today as well, and you want to go as far as possible, but we knew when we drew PSG it was going to be very difficult. We saw in Paris when we struggled but we won, and today we saw a very good Liverpool side but we’re out of the competition.

“Today from the first second and then extra time, when fatigue kicks in for both sides, it becomes more open but especially regular time, we showed a very good game. We can speak about the game for ages but we’re out of the competition, that is the reality.”

What Virgil van Dijk was spotted doing after Liverpool vs PSG

Interestingly, PSG are keeping an eye on Van Dijk’s future and hope to prise him away from Liverpool.

But Van Dijk’s desire is to stay at Liverpool despite his contract running out in the summer.

But after the contest, the Dutchman was spotted having a chat with the French club’s president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and their sporting director Luis Campos.

Whether the post-match conversation eventually leads to a move to PSG for Van Dijk remains a mystery but for now, the Liverpool captain will be focused on uplifting his teammates and reflecting on a disappointing night.
