Bayern’s veterans set an example in Kimmich’s decision to stay or leave the club…
Bayern Munich and Joshua Kimmich have come to an agreement to extend the player’s contract till the end of the 2028/29 season. This comes after days of back and forth between the two parties and much speculation in the media. With the official announcement out, he opened up about the factors that went into his decision making, a crucial one of which is the decision to stay or look for new pastures.
Kimmich gave his thoughts on the route to take at this juncture in his career.
“It was a fundamental decision for me: do I go the Thomas Müller and Philipp Lahm way or the David Alaba and Toni Kroos way and try something new. The topic of identification played a big role – not only because I feel comfortable here, but also the feeling that I can achieve everything every year,” Kimmich told FCBayerrn.com (via @iMiaSanMia).
Former Bayern players Phillip Lahm, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos and David Alaba had massive success with the club. Having been products of the youth academy, everytime they wore the shirt, they carried the pride and identity of the club. It was therefore, natural to be disappointed to see Kroos and Alaba leave and join Real Madrid. Lahm and Müller on the other hand decide to continue their football in Bavaria giving immense joy to the fans with their performances. Josh had the examples in front of him. While both parties had success, it was identification that set things apart for Kimmich.
