‘Always’: Florian Wirtz named his dream club in 2021 that he really ‘wanted to play for’, it’s not Liverpool

Florian Wirtz is closing in on a move to Liverpool this summer.

The Germany international was always going to be one of the biggest names in this transfer window, and Liverpool made their move early.

TBR Football revealed yesterday that the overall package will reach €150 million and that FSG are blown away by Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes’ work in the Wirtz deal.

The playmaker is expected to complete his move in the coming days, and although he has picked Liverpool over other teams, the Reds are not his dream club.

Florian Wirtz’s dream club is Barcelona, not Liverpool

Florian Wirtz started his youth career at Brauweiler before moving to Koln in 2010.

The German spent almost a decade there before getting himself a big transfer to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2020.

Since then, Wirtz has been a star for Die Werkself, and it’s his performances there that have convinced Liverpool that he is worth the big bucks.

Despite spending all his life in Germany, Wirtz’s dream was not to join the country’s biggest team, Bayern Munich. It was to fly to Spain and play for Barcelona.

When asked if he had a ‘specific career goal’ during an interview with BILD in 2021, he said: “As a young boy, I always wanted to play for Barcelona.

“Nothing has changed about that, but until then, I still have some time.”

Mundo Deportivo claimed last year that Barcelona and their sporting director Deco’s ‘dream’ was to sign Wirtz this summer, but Liverpool look set to be the ones to win the race for his signature.

Should Liverpool be concerned about Florian Wirtz leaving them for Barcelona one day?

It is not too big a shock that Wirtz’s dream club is Barcelona.

The German, as a kid, would’ve watched Lionel Messi breaking all sorts of records at the Camp Nou, and that would’ve probably been the biggest reason why he admired the Catalans.

A move to Barcelona may still be a goal for Wirtz, but Liverpool are going to tie him down to a long-term contract, and they will be well protected for the years to come.

Besides, Michael Edwards is a genius when it comes to player sales, and we’re sure he’ll demand an absolute fortune if Barcelona or any other club attempts a move for Wirtz anytime soon.

That is why Liverpool should have no fear about losing Wirtz to Barcelona.
