Liverpool have made the first step in a potential move to sign Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak with the news coming just a day after he scored against them in the Carabao Cup final.

Newcastle United won their first trophy in 70 years by defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final courtesy of goals from Dan Burn and Isak, whose performance blew Thierry Henry away.

The Swede was always going to have his say on the Final given his incredible goal-scoring form and he ended up scoring the winner against Arne Slot’s team.

But now, Liverpool are eager to bring him to Anfield next season and are prepared to go to battle with Newcastle and Arsenal for his signature.

Liverpool contact people close to Alexander Isak

Liverpool have already made contact with people close to Alexander Isak as they are keen on a move for the striker, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Reds have added him to their list of targets for the summer transfer window with Arne Slot planning big changes to his attack.

Romano told his YouTube channel: “Liverpool are also there for Alexander Isak, already made some contact with people close to the player. For Liverpool, he is one of the names they are considering in that position.”

The Italian journalist also claims that Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez could both leave Anfield this summer and help fund a move for an elite forward.

However, Slot’s team are expected to face strong competition for the Swedish international from Arsenal who have made Isak their number one target.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are also desperate to keep hold of the 25-year-old and have no plans whatsoever to sell him in the summer.

What Newcastle are saying about keeping Alexander Isak

Newcastle are insisting that regardless of whether they qualify for the Champions League they want to keep Isak at all costs.

The Magpies are making that very clear to interested clubs having just won their first major trophy in 70 years.

Romano added: “Newcastle are loving life with Alexander Isak, he’s scored 20 goals and is a fantastic striker. They keep insisting in private and public that they wanted to keep Isak.

“They hope to be in the Champions League next season, but in any case, they want to keep Isak at the club so that is the message Newcastle.”
