This period was exhausting for Bayern.

Spanning from January 11th to March 15th, the two month period since Bayern Munich’s return to action after the winter break has been long. Not just because it was the longest period without an international break this season, but also because it was packed with games. Usually, Bayern enjoy a gradual introduction to the Rückrunde of any given campaign, but the expanded Champions League format saw Bayern play two more league phase matches, as well as a play-off to qualify for the Round of 16.

And those games took their toll. One just has to see the match against Union Berlin to see evidence of tired minds and bodies, as the Bavarians struggled to break down the relegation threatened team. Ergo, via a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), head coach Vincent Kompany decided an extended break is best for those he can grant it to:

Vincent Kompany has given the non-international players 8 days off, since there will be no other opportunity to take a break for the rest of the season. Manuel Neuer and Kim Min-jae will continue their rehab in the meantime.

Despite some iffy Bundesliga results recently, Bayern are still in a strong position both domestically and in Europe. Balancing the remaining workload will be key for the Bavarians’ success in both competitions.
